My 80 year old father is facinated with my iPhone. He is due for a Tmobile upgrade and thinks he wants a phone where he can check email and have web access. I do not think he will use these features often, but he might check weather, look up an address, use google maps and a few other things every so often. I think he would like having his calendar on the phone as he has missed an appt or two in the past. I am looking for the best phone as far as ease of use; this is a man that types with 2 fingers and still hasn’t learned how to use Tivo!!

Does Tmobile have a charge for Internet usage? AT&T charges for a PDA plan, but I didn’t know how others charged.

I have a blackberry with T-Mobile and I hate it! My son though loves his!
There is a $20 per phone charge for internet and I believe $10 for e-mail only. Calendar/reminders are easy to use.
I hate my phone because I keep dialing different functions while it is in my purse/pocket etc. I do not like to block the keyboard, which I guess would solve my problem…

It seems to be a very common problem with all Blackberries. H’s butt is known to leave me long, garbled messages (my cell is the first number in his contacts). H periodically gets the same kind of messages from his boss :)

TMobile has Google phone as an iPhone alternative (my iPhone fan friend says she is impressed with her BF’s Google phone).

I think my dad would fare better with a phone with a full keyboard, but he doesn’t need a Blackberry. Most phones these days have internet access, so I am just looking to see what phones T-mobile might offer that would be cheap and easy. My son has an old Samsung Blackjack with a full keyboard that would do what my dad needs, without being a PDA.

There is a bunch of others, like Samsung phones, but you have to look for them on the TMobile website (it did not let me paste the link to my search results). Unfortunately, data plans cost extra. Or your dad can get one of the “Evn More Plus” plans that needs no annual contract but has web, text and calling for one flat rate (you just have to pay more for the phone), for example, this one for $60/month:

Check the coverage area first. If you cant get G coverage with Iphone forgetaboutit
It’s is not entirely true that if he got good coverage on t mobile that he will get good t mobile 3G coverage or is it 5G now? There are coverage maps to check online.

For example I phone coverage around Loyola and Northwestern is very spotty and phone coverage is non existant from AT&T. But T Mobile is strong around both university campus.

My D and I got T-mobile’s Samsung Gravity 2’s a few months ago. It is a candy bar phone, has the regular keypad on top, and easily slides open to a full keyboard. My D uses the full keyboard all the time, as she hates regular texting and predictive won’t work with her dyslexia. She loves it! I never use the full keyboard, , but also like the phone.
