Need to book an auditorium... advice?

I know this is a wierd place to post this question, but as parents, you may be able to guide me…

I am going to be hosting a cultural show during the month of November in the Chicago area. I am having difficulty finding places where I can book an auditorium (semi-large) for a cheap price. Please note that we are just a small high school organization and this is the first time we will be doing something like this …does anyone have suggestions or general ideas of places where I can look to find affordable rates?

Any comment is great appreciated…always!

Thanks -

Our high school auditoriums are rented to the public. Have you tried that? If your own school’s price is too high, you might look around until you find a better price. Call the school districts’ community relations departments (call the main district number - board office - and ask to be connected). Many districts publish that info on their websites.

Churches are another terrific resource for auditoriums. Again, call around & ask. Ethnic cultural associations might have auditoriums in their buildings, as well.

Good luck!

Community colleges come to mind. Harper College in the Chicago area is ringing bells with me. Also the state universities in our area rent out their auditorium.

I am not sure how much of a ‘stage’ you need, but one place you should definitely call is a movie theater, although not if you want Saturday night.

I don’t know how many schools/churches will be able to give you their auditorium for a whole week in November if they use it regularly. And I think you are finding out what the people in the business of renting out meeting spaces charge for that: it’s not cheap. (It’s not cheap to build and maintain the buildings, either.)

Around where I live, I could probably point you to some decent-sized third-string theaters/concert halls that might be worth a call, although I have no idea what they would charge. I’m sure Chicagoland has the same kinds of places – like, an 800-seat hall in a nearby, accessible suburb.

No idea what you have in Chicago, but some museums also have auditoriums for rent, although I doubt they’d be cheap.

some public libraries do, too.

Both companies (corporations, so…big) my husband has worked at have had nice, decent-sized auditoriums that sit unused most of the time. There must be some in Chicagoland.

Here in the Cleveland area, many high schools are willing to rent out their auditoriums. If you do not have good luck when you try public high schools, try some private high schools.

Try the local VFW–they often have halls for rent.

Like dmd77, but I was going to suggest the Elks Club. Our band has used the Elks for a fundraiser and were pleased.
