Do I have to fill out FAFSA if I plan to attend a SUNY or CUNY school? Also, if the college sees that I can definetly afford to attend the school, will the SUNY or CUNY make me pay a lot more in tuition than the estimated amount of tuition on their Cost of attendance chart?

The cost of attendance is set by the college for all students. It isn’t going to go up just for YOU based on your family income. That includes tuition.

But if you want to take a Direct Loan, you will need to complete a FAFSA. If you want to be considered for any need based aid at all, you will need to complete a FAFSA.

You do not have to fill out FAFSA. The fact that you do not fill out FAFSA does NOT mean that the school will charge you more. It cant’ charge you more…it can only charge you their published rates.

And if you don’t fill out FASFA, how the heck “can they see” that you “definitely” can afford the school???

How are the parent’s assets and student assets “taxed” (for a lack of a better word for FAFSA?

^See <a href=“How Assets Hurt College Aid Eligibility On FAFSA And CSS Profile”>http://www.forbes.com/sites/troyonink/2014/02/14/how-assets-hurt-college-aid-eligibility-on-fafsa-and-css-profile/
Parent assets - up to 5.64%
Student assets - 20%

Yes. parent assets are assessed at approximately 5.6% and student assets at 20% for FAFSA purposes.

Parents also have an asset protection allowance that varies depending on the age of the oldest parent. There is no student asset protection allowance.

But if your schools require the Profile, then the assessment %ages could vary.

I don’t think SUNY & CUNY use CSS Profile.

OP, are you New York in-state?

SUNY and CUNY don’t use the Profile…I was just including that info in case the OP is looking at schools that DO use the Profile!

Instate NY student

^Then you would pay the full in-state tuition & fees if you don’t have financial aid

Assets are not “taxed” in the way that you are thinking. There is no taxing at all for one thing.

You can’t be charged more than the school costs. If the school costs $20k per year, and your family has a million in assets, the school can’t charge 6% of that million.

If Bill Gates filed fafsa (ha ha), he would have a gazillion dollar EFC. That does not mean a school can charge him a gazillion dollars. All it can do is charge him the full published price.
