Need unmet EFC 0

So my college (The University of North Texas) only gave me 11,050 to attend when I need 20,500. Will more financial aid be given? They also sent me an email saying I am a good candidate for the Emerald Eagle Scholar program that pays my tuition and fees, but I will not find out if I made it until the end of the month or early May. Does it seems like I will get it? If I can’t get anymore money what should I do? Thanks

The vast majority of schools unfortunately do not meet full financial need.

Are you within commuting distance of UNT? If you live at home and commute to school, you would save a significant portion of those costs by avoiding room and board charges.

Otherwise, if you don’t get the scholarship, your best option is to start at a community college near your home and transfer later on.

Good luck with the Emerald Eagle program! Fingers crossed for you.

What do you mean by “unmet need”? Is your EFC 0?

[2012-2013 Academic Year | Student Financial Aid and Scholarships](http://financialaid.unt.edu/2012-2013-academic-year)
Resident Tuition $6,488
Fees $2,590
Books and Supplies $1,000
Room and Board On Campus $7,150,
Transportation On Campus $1,692
Personal On Campus $1,324
Resident Total for 2012-2013 On Campus $20,244

Where is $20,500 need coming from? Extra personal expenses? Extra transportation? Extra movie tickets and other entertainment?

There are 3 different EFC’s:

 1. Arbitrary number from FAFSA that determines government funding
 2. How much the institution thinks your family can pay
 3. How much you think you can pay

Does UNT guarantee to meet need in any three of these scenarios? Hell no.

ya ya, I think the OP means that COA is 20,500, total aid in package 11,050. So he/she is trying to figure out how to fund the 9,000 or so gap.

I don’t think they are saying they need another 20,500.

But 9,000 is still a big gap!

If the OP lives at home and commutes, they have more than enough aid to pay for tuition and fees.

Resident Tuition $6,488
Fees $2,590
Books and Supplies $1,000

Room and Board On Campus $7,150,

Basic college costs about…$17,000

How much can you earn over the summer? how much can you earn during the school year?

Are any of those fees “health insurance”? do you have insurance? If so, can you get that taken away?

What is the breakdown of your FA pkg?

I am from Texas, I have a very good idea what he meant.

If he qualifies for Emerald Eagle Scholar program his family income is 40,000 or less which from the state of Texas makes him eligible for Texas grant (max amount full tuition, I believe, but it’s for EFC 0, and I never heard anyone got that much, usually it’s partial), probably top 10% scholarship, if he qualifies; from federals for Pell grant??? and Stafford loans. Plus Texas universities have Perkins loans, SEOG and WS, and WS can be from federals or from the state of Texas (TCWSP).

Texas has only 1 limit for finaid - COA. The majority of kids with EFC 0 with high stats are able to get finaid very close to full ride, especially when they qualify for any merit scholarship from the university. UT Austin, the “stingiest” merit university in the whole state is able to give “full need rides” to EFC 0 students because of federal and state aid.

Emerald Eagle Scholar program that OP mentioned covers full tuition and fees, plus finances some trips abroad.
If OP gets his Emerald Eagle award everything else will not go away, as the matter of fact if his EFC is 0 he’ll have full ride + trips abroad.

If his EFC is not 0 then I don’t know what he is talking about. And I don’t understand why he believes his need is several hundred dollars higher than the official university COA.

We are very lucky here in Texas to have pretty good economy, so it is extremely difficult for a resident not to find an option to get an affordable education, even with room and board.
We even have TAFSA program for residents who don’t qualify for FAFSA due to immigration status.

The original post just doesn’t make much sense to me.

I am sorry, I am kind of inbetween different tasks and don’t pay much attention. Your EFC is 0, you mentioned it.
You have til the end of the month to find out about your Emerald Eagle Scholar program, and with EFC 0 your are pretty much first in the line and I am sure they’ll try to notify people before May 1.
Don’t worry.:)

Just in case. Did you apply anywhere else and got better finaid?

I just cannot imagine unaffordable option with EFC 0. Community colleges will give you "full need ride’. Even if your grades are bad you’ll get something like WS, but you’ll be still covered.

mom2collegekids

I don’t know about UNT but I am pretty sure UT system currently has some kind of “pledge” to cover COA for students with family income less than 25,000. They “pledge” to cover tuition (-EFC) for students with family income less than 60,000, it is some kind of scale, I don’t know details.

Health centers at many Texas universities can accept students without health insurance. It is very affordable.

This kid will be fine.

I believe UTN knowing that he qualified for the Emerald Eagle Scholar program just did not give him all the other need-based aid he was eligible for. If he qualifies he’ll not need it. If he doesn’t qualify, they’ll add something else.
I am not even sure Stafford loans are included into $11,050 packet.
Really, Pell and Texas grants only would give him what he’s got. :D

^^^

Thanks!

It’s too bad that the student won’t learn about that scholarship until the end of the month! So late!

From what I am seeing… the scholarship covers “full tuition” aka… not room and board. The FA package that is presented here already covers “full tuition”. The OP is basically just short room and board, but I don’t think that this school in any way is going to cover that from what has been presented on this thread.

Is that about right?

If this student is given the mentioned tuition scholarship, then his Pell Grant and other aid can go towards room and board.

The student won’t lose Pell or student loans if he gets this scholarship.

Ah true, I was thinking of the situation where grants and loans replaced the FA award, but yes, if it is a scholarship and not school grants, then yes, it would presumbly be stacked.

I was told freshmen at UNT must live in a dorm and purchase a meal plan so commuting is out of the question and also I live about an hour away from there which would cost a lot in gas.

iheart94

Why don’t you tell us

 1. what exactly is included in your financial aid?
 2. what universities you have been accepted to?
 3. what is your class rank?

here is the link to different kinds of financial aid available in Texas
[College For All Texans: Types of Financial Aid](<a href=“College For All Texans: Home”>College For All Texans: Types of Financial Aid)

Have you found summer job already? You will need those movie tickets, right?:)

And here is net price calculator for different Texas colleges. You can compare finaid estimates of 3 colleges, if you need more than 3 run calculator again. Merit aid is not included.
[AID for COLLEGE in TEXAS](<a href=“College For All Texans: Page Not Found”>http://www.collegeforalltexans.com/apps/CollegeMoney/)

UNT is not the best college financially, but as I already said in Texas it is just impossible not to get an affordable option, for a student with EFC 0 not to cover COA.

OP, UNT requires all freshmen either live on campus OR commute from home. [UNT :: Housing](http://reslife.unt.edu/) It IS an option.

And there are always apartments around colleges that are 1/2 price of dorms, sometimes 1/3 price. They don’t look like hotel, of course. And nobody cleans your bathroom. :)

I sent OP pm with a link to “extra money” sources.

The gasoline cost of driving two hours a day is much, much less than the cost of a dorm and meal plan.
