Negotiating salary on a job offer

@sorghum: Thought we covered this. After asking for a salary match, employer may ask for justification. “Need” is just one suggested approach for a response.

Again, my advice is to be prepared–even to be over prepared. It is up to OP’s daughter as to how she wants to prepare for such a “plea” or “negotiation”.

Do you mean ‘elevator pitch’?

Yes, in our company we used it interchangeably. Elevated who you are, and give us a speech about who you are. But the elevator pitch is the industry term. We used the term “elevated” more often in our casual training course, teaching the employees how to sell themselves, and always go into any interview with the speech/pitch in his/her mind

And, I was just playing along with the OP about a hypothetical response to a hypothetical question. No one is going to ask that stupid question why should we match your current salary.

The horse is dead. Please stop beating it.

So far so good. Her email was followed up by speaking with the recruiter who says that the offer they made is in the middle of the salary range for the job (which means they have room to add to it), that they were surprised by how much she is currently making (she gave them a total compensation number not just salary), and they will get back to her soon with a new offer.

well they upped her salary a little and added a sign on bonus - I think she is good to go. So it worked to ask for something!

Great news and congratulations to your daughter! Yep never hurt to ask!

Coincidentally I just had an offer out to a young person who is graduating this year (supposedly). This kid comes from an Ivy league, and it’s VERY rare that we got people from the ivies. Very smart, interviewing team loves him. After the offer, he asked if we would relocate him from an hour away. We were very amused with the request. He didn’t ask for more money but it was a generous offer for someone who has no experiences but 1 internship).

Now the relocation package is hard to come by, typically for “critical” Sr. Manager or director level and above. He would have to go to 5 promotions to get to Sr. Manager level, to give you an idea. BUT because I really want him on my team, and we knew he would take the offer anyway without the relocation, we decided to give him 5K for sign on bonus as an extra incentive.

He will be working from home for now, told him don’t get too used to it. Once this is all over he would have to come to the office at least 3 days a week.

Congratulations to your daughter.
