So we got a letter and phone call from Nelnet about a "loan’ for our daughter. I called them back and inquired about it. They wanted a soc. security # to verify. Not gonna happen. I told them that I was on a fact finding mission to determine the source of the debt that led to this loan. They told me the name, and it was the large Ohio school where she did her grad degree
The thing is, she had an assistanceship at the school and it is a mystery about where this debt might have come from. We are talking 5 grand.
The way the loan, if it is indeed a valid loan, became delinquent is that Nelnet did some E-mail postings about the loan to my E-mail addy.
So I just got a call from my daughter, and she spoke with OSU. The only record of any loan activity with them is a loan was offered by OSU and she declined. So now Nelnet is threatening to screw up her credit by reporting a delinquent loan that does not exist.
I told her that this is very serious and that the main threat is what these scum could do to her credit score. I also advised her that every thing that relates to this needs to be in writing, and that she will have to keep a file on it for the rest of her life, as student loan servicers do not play by the same rules as the rest of the banking industry. I guess the first tip-off that this could be a scam was that they used our e-mail address which our daughter has not used since attending OSU.
I am looking for advice on what to do next to make absolutely sure that this goes away and stays away. Also wondering whether or not these people could be sued for fraud…
If you are disputing the loans that Nelnet is currently holding for your daughter you will want to first contact Ohio States financial aid office to make sure these loans were never used. If they state they returned the loans then they will need to contact Nelnet’s school servicing center to verify status of the loans. If Ohio State does not have record of the loans please contact Nelnet at 888.486.4722 to have a fraud letter sent out to you, that will show the steps on how to report the loan as fraud.
