Nerd Culture...?

One thing that I noticed during my visit to Vanderbilt was the suspicious absence of an apparent nerd sub-culture. I applied none-the-less (honestly, what kind of reason is that to not apply to a great school? :D) and was accepted ED I, but now I’m getting kind of concerned. Does anyone know how accepting the student body is of us less-preppy types?

haha there are nerds here… you just have to find them!

You need not worry…the number of LAN parties each semester alone should give you some indication that Vandy is not devoid of a nerd culture. I do think that most of the nerd culture at Vanderbilt associated with the Engineering School. Engineering arguably has the lowest profile among the four undergraduate divisions which is a situation which leads to the impression that there is not a nerd culture to to be found here. As is repeatedly mentioned here, not everyone at Vanderbilt is a Prada-clad, BMW-driving trust fund baby.

do the nerdier girls join sororities? which ones would those be?

And not every Vandy engineering student is a nerd.

You’re right. I did not intend to insinuate that.

Oh good, thanks everyone who has responded thus far :D

There are nerds here. You really, really have to look though.

I get the impression that the nerdier girls do not join sororities. I didn’t join a sorority, and a lot of the girls I know didn’t either.

Haha, you would ask that question. I’ve seen a lot of nerdiness, some in the form of LAN parties but most of it in individual dorms. I walked down a hallway and saw five rooms with their doors open playing Halo on a friday night. People play DDR in the lobbies of dorms and I myself have seen people with Guitar Hero, N64, Atari, Super Nintendo, PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, and the Wii. If you are a nerd I wouldn’t worry about finding others of your ‘kind’. Haha

everyone here has some nerd in them…if they didn’t, they wouldn’t be able to get into vandy…as for hardcore nerds (with the stereotypical taped glasses, highly worn pants, etc), there are a few, but you need to find them if you want to be with them!

you won’t be disappointed by the intelligence levels of your peers, if that is what you are concerned about…

Luni,
My son is a junior at Vanderbilt and I know that what you are talking about is not just a lack of nerds, as much as a preponderance of socially confident students. And you are right to notice many, many well dressed preppy type students who seem to have it all together. But, the great thing about Vanderbilt is that there are also many other students who are very smart, and were somewhat nerdy in high school (they may not be as noticeble on tours as they are in libraries, dorm rooms, etc.). My son was not in the social elite at high school, nor is he at Vanderbilt. But the school has a wonderfully positive atmosphere, and he has made good friends as well as had some outstanding professors who like his studious nature.

I think you are a little anxious about college, but almost every senior gets that way. My son still gets oohs and ahhs whenever people ask him where he goes. So, enjoy your acheivement of being accepted into a major university. Congratulations!
