I’m soooooo nervous. I mean, I’m excited and all to go, being accepted and everything, because it’s an excellent school for what I’m interested in (magazine/newspaper journalism). Only problem is that I’m having cold feet. Especially after seeing the summer assignment from Dean Rubin. I dunno the last time I read the news! What should I do? Is Newhouse extremely hard?

Haha, I got scared too. But now I just listen to the news in the morning. I don’t think it’s gonna be that bad. We’ll be fine!

I’m going to newhouse too. The problem is, as an international student, I don’t know if I could relate a story to the summer assignment. I have no idea right now.

Hey. Here’s some advice I know you can’t follow, but I’ll give it to you anyway: Don’t worry.
We all freak out a little about that stuff. The assignment is the media consumption log, right? Yeah, not a big deal.

I actually wrote in my log that my primary source of news was Jay Leno. Most my records were along the lines of “I heard a headline when I walked by a TV”. I got to school with about ten lines of incoherent and wimpy summary typed up. Kids started gushing about their 12-page, plastic covered, doctorate-style essays (not kidding), so I stretched mine to 2 pages (I also hadn’t answered the essay questions until then). They give you 2 days of class before you have to turn it in to your professor. Every professor is different. I received full marks, like all the news-obsessed tome-writers. Don’t worry. When classes start, make NYT your RSS feed, read it on the web and pick up a free copy on your way to class when you have Com107. You’ll be fine.

Threekids’kid: I don’t think we have to do a news log anymore. We just got a letter telling us to prepare for a 2 minute multimedia presentation about a personal experience with the first amendment. Then at the end, it was just saying, “hey, watch the news b/c we’ll have quizzes.”

Oh, yea. But the policy/law in China is different, how can I tell a story about the first ten Amendment?

Ah, sry bout that Jouraynalism.
Joannashue, why don’t you choose an experience when a first amendment freedom would have drastically changed the outcome? Did you work on a school paper?
Since I don’t know the assignment, I can’t help too much. But apparently I can’t keep my mouth shut either!

Thank G-d you don’t keep your mouth shut. Your information has been invaluable!
