What does this mean? Registration at DS’ school was done over the summer with his advisor.
Do you mean have athletes on campus over the summer to see the weight room, playing fields, pool, etc? At my DD’s NESCAC, this was all a part of the campus tours she did while at the school’s camps for her sport during recruiting. A formal orientation to the weight room was done once she was on campus as a first-year.
She received her training plan over the summer as to what she should do before she arrived on campus (for a spring sport). Once on campus, the weight training is lead by a fitness coach. This is at her specific school - but is identical to my ds’ non-NESCAC D3 school.
My daughter is at a non nescac New England d3 but her experience was very similar to her friends at a nescac - once recruits were announced by the coach in late winter/early spring they created a group chat and then were added to the team group chat in early summer/late spring. Coach and captains sent team emails with summer training plans and pre season fitness testing (fall sport). Lots of emails and zoom meetings with athletic staff, teammates and coaches in early summer. During fall athlete move in there were athlete specific info sessions. Fall sport athletes got on campus a few weeks before other students and got priority registration ahead of other new students. Winter and spring sports came to campus and registered like all other incoming freshmen.
Who created the group chat? The coaches or the athletes?
I don’t think any schools, NESCAC included, have a summer program for all athletes. The fall sport athletes often get to school a few weeks before other students, but winter and spring athletes just come in with the rest of the freshman.
My daughter, a spring sport, was connected by social media to the other freshman and they could sign up as roommates if they wanted to. They did receive a summer workout schedule from the coach.
When they arrived at school, they met with the coach and started a fall ball schedule and a workout routine.
I believe the first years was created by the athletes. The team group chat has coaches in it so not sure who created it
Thanks much for the color, apologies for the typo “furiously” should have read “further”. D24 has visited the facilities. So she can hope to
-
Connect with futur freshmen by group chat in the spring/early summer 2024
-
Expect a summer training plan/zoom from coaches in early summer 2024
-
Possibly get on campus before non athlete freshmen, and go through an athlete/team orientation
Nope, highly unlikely. Not for a winter sport.
As a winter sport she will not get to campus early or get to move in early due to athletics, maybe as an international student.
She can reach out to commiitted incoming athletes and current team members now via social media - I think my kid uses snap chat the most but many kids post commitments and many schools have class of Instagram pages.
She should just ask the coach what to expect moving into spring and summer. Assuming she has already been accepted and have committed to the school…
Has she committed? Other posts of yours made it clear she did not get into her ED school and that she is still waiting for a decision from another top choice of hers (McGill)…has she changed her mind, applied and been accepted as well as accepted a roster spot from a nescac school in these past few days?
Added my responses in bold.
You know, a lot of students don’t want to or can’t get to campus early because they have summer jobs, family plans, or just got out of high school! ONe of my kids had a school that started really early, I think it was Aug 11. She’d only been out of hs for 2 months and was still finishing up summer things. Her sister didn’t start until after labor day.
Don’t be in a rush! You’ll miss her soon enough.
None of the things you are asking are specific to NESCAC schools. Perhaps reopen your own thread if you want to re-engage the community with your questions.
Why. Are. You. Asking??
Because according to you, she does not have a spot on a team, and was rejected from her ED school.
D24 was rejected from her ED school, but it doesn’t mean she can’t find a spot in subsequent application rounds.
We’re just asking to understand the process that follows admission for athletes at NESCAC schools, and swimmers in particular. As suggested, she can enquire directly with coaches
Doesn’t it, though? Hasn’t she been in touch with coaches at all the schools she’s applying to? Have any said she can walk on?
My suggestion would be to put thoughts of recruiting, teams, preseasons aside until decisions are in and you know what your daughter’s choices are.
The OP of the swimming thread has 6 days left to find a school that may accept his kid on swimming merits. While a NESCAC thread may be the wrong place to discuss this, lets be encouraging if he is widening his focus beyond unattainable schools.
Typically, swimming being a winter sport, swimmers (outside of Power 5 programs) will not do that. In fact, NESCAC does not allow official practices until October 22nd (or there about). So, although there are captains practices and plenty of team bonding, there is no summer/school sponsored pre-orientation.
If she hasn’t been offered and accepted a roster spot then she will not likely be included in the early parts of the process like the Instagram/social media posts or included in group chats, etc. my experience with nescac and other top SLACs is that the vast majority (if not all) verbally committ and apply and are accepted in the ED/EA round. If your DD is waiting for the RD and has not been communicating with the coach continually since she started recruiting I would not assume she has a roster spot - even if offered one this past summer. She needs to talk directly with coaches to get a clear picture and be honest with them in where she is in the application process
Is a NESCAC school really a great “safety” option though? Without applying ED or EA as an unhooked international I can’t imagine any nescac would help in widening the net at this point
