DH and I subscribed to Netflix for the holidays but opted to keep it a few months. We have been buzzing through “Friday Night Lights” - 4 seasons.

Honestly I thought it would be too much football for me and too much drama for him. But we have both grown to like the show. After the first episode we were still undecided, but we soon after got hooked. Just posting my recommendation, in case others are looking for a new series to watch.

FNL was one of the first Netflix TV series we binged watched our way through a few years ago. I’m also very much not a football fan so I was surprised how much I loved this show.
Great writing and interesting characters. It got a bit more soapy as series went on but still pretty cool.

Be careful, we also thought we’d ‘try’ Netlix for a month or two and we’re hooked!
Sooooo many series we have loved: Damages, Dexter, Weeds, etc

MusicMom we watched all of those same series (binge style!) on Netflix.

We’ve had some previous discussions on Friday Night Lights. I think it is the best show ever to have been on TV.

FNL is very good, but my top show of all time is The Wire.

BalletMom- glad we’re not the only binge watchers…kinda a guilty pleasure for us.
Like when the house really needs some attention but then there’s a REALLY exciting episode of whatever calling out to me!

Booklady- I’ve heard such good things about The Wire. It is just one of the very few series I couldn’t get hooked on…too many characters that kept getting mushed in my old brain??

I think FNL never received the critical acclaim that it deserved. We watched it on TV for six seasons from 2006-2011. It achieved a level of raw, honest humanity seldom found in most TV shows. It’s one of my top 10 favorite TV shows. Actually, I wouldn’t mind watching the entire series all over again on Netflix.

musicmom, both my H and S had watched The Wire before I did, so they reminded me of who the various characters were during the first few episodes. That helped a lot. I thought it was the most realistic drama I had ever seen - at times I felt I was watching a documentary about inner-city Baltimore.

Ha, West Wing is a family favorite. We watched it a bit when aired. Then later we watched all 7 season on DVD. We all liked it and feel like the DC news is more meaningful having had our fictional view. DD just got us hooked on Netflix (exclusive?) “House of Cards”, a darker but interesting story of DC politics.

Thanks to those that recommended FNL/Netflix on the Comcast-on-Demand thread.

colorado_mom, be sure to see the BBC original version of House of Cards, with Ian Richardson. It’s brilliant.

Yes, the Directv new version of House of Cards is fantastic, as is (or because of) Kevin Spacey.
I think you can stream all episodes now.

Has anyone made the jump from Netflix to Amazon Prime streaming? I’m tempted because for the $80/year it’s less then Netflix and I would also get the book loaners for my Kindle. I don’t know how their offerings compare to Netflix though. We so rarely use Netflix now but I just know as soon as I swap a series I want to watch will come to mind and I’ll be kicking myself. Has anyone done this or made a comparison?

We have netflix and Amazon Prime streaming. Came with our 50% off Amazon Prime account after the free student account ran out, so $39.99 for Amazon prime. The streaming for us doesn’t work as well during Prime viewing hours, cable/internet is slow. But it is similar to netflix but not everything is free. Some movies are 1.99, others 2.99 and yet others free. Stuff that was not available on Netflix is on prime and vice-versa.

We have just the Netflix streaming, no discs in the mail. Our Amazon is shared by 5 family members so in probably 1 week we collectively have paid for the membership with the free 2 day shipping alone. The Amazon streaming is just icing on the cake. Son ordered K-cups for his coffee maker (80 cups for 29.99) and they were overnighted Fedex, received next day. Cheaper than driving to the store and spending the time and gas. Not to mention that deal for 80 cups isn’t available at a brick and mortar.

So we have both and like both. Worth it to all of us.

Kat
we too have watched all the Wire…“you come at the king, you best not miss”

blueiguana,

We have an Amazon Prime membership. We buy tons of things from Amazon and the free 2-day shipping is a great perk. Well worth the $79 even if you don’t watch any of their streaming TV shows and movies. We’ve use both Netflix and Amazon Prime. Both are okay, but don’t have all the movies or TV shows that we would like to watch. We’ve been watching Season One and Two of Downton Abbey free on Amazon Prime. We find that we still have to rent DVDs from Redbox or get them from our library if they aren’t available on Amazon Prime or Netflix. If had to compare the two, I believe that Netflix has a better selection to choose from.

Thanks. I should have said I already have the 2-day shipping through my sons Amazon Prime student account. We got it free for a year and renewed in August @ $39 for another year. If I’d thought about it I should have just gotten the regular Amazon Prime @ $80 instead of renewing his but it didn’t dawn on me until about 2 weeks after that we could have gotten the movie streaming & books and gotten rid of Netflix. Oh well, nbd. We also use Rebox a lot. Almost every weekend I have discount codes so we usually pay 75C for a movie. Hard to beat.

blueiguana,

When our Amazon Prime student membership ran out last summer, I was faced with the same predicament. Should we renew at $39 or go for the $79 plan which included movie streaming. We decided to upgrade to the $79 plan. It comes out to an additional $3.33/month. We only activate our Netflix membership when we will have the time to watch a lot of movies. I wish that Netflix had the option to either sign up for streaming or get your DVDs by mail. But you have to pay for the streaming plan, then add on the DVDs by mail. This costs $15.98/month or $17.98 for blu-ray.

aquamarinesea, although they hide it well on their website, you can call Netflix and get a disc only plan for $7.99 a month. I suspended my account for a few months while I was busy with my son’s wedding and when I was ready to reactivate, it looked like all I could do was stream only or stream and disc for more money. I called and they were able to do just the DVDs, but I think they don’t really want you to know that. After all, it’s far more cost effective for them to sell you streaming only. The problem is that the selection is not nearly as good for movies.

2VU0609,

I did not know that. I will call them and request DVD my mail only. Thanks for the info.

We just started watching this too…Kevin Spacey is so wickedly good. He doesn’t even have to say anything; just one look at us (his audience) speaks volumes. Hooked.
