I’ve had it with driving 15 minutes to Blockbuster and finding they don’t have the movie I want to see. What’s the best mailing type video company out there? Blockbuster or Netflix or is there another one? We probably rent just 3 movies a month but that might be because it’s inconvenient to get and return them so maybe we would watch 4 or more. Opinions?

Tried both Netflix and Blockbuster’s on line service. This was almost a year ago, so maybe things have changed but Netflix was far superior. Netflix had a bigger selection, quick turnaround time on returns and higer availability of the movies that I wanted to rent.

No comparison, really.

we havea great independent video store close to our house ( 5 min walking)- plus they have coupons! from grocery reciepts- this is great for impulse viewings
for things they don’t have- I use netflix- I never even looked at Blockbuster-
both D and I are watching series DVDs ( she Horatio Hornblower- me six feet under) and netflix is very easy to keep track of and fast.

I must agree with m&sdad. We have done both Netflix and Blockbuster, too, and have found Netflix to be superior.

I love movies on demand on Comcast. No waiting or driving. They just need to get more movies released on their system.

Netflix is the best! I think they must have every commercially available DVD, including TV shows and foreign films. The customer service is outstanding, turnout time is great. What’s not to like?

We’ve used Blockbluster and been very satisfied with the service. Of course, it helps that one of their distribution centers is in our town. You might want to check out where the distribution centers are closest to where you live; it can really impact how quickly you get your DVDs.

Good point about the nearness of the distribution center. Ours is about 50 miles away, so discs arrive one or two days after mailing.

Netflix is also very good about rushing a replacement disc when you report one as unplayable, mailing the replacement before the damaged one is returned to them. What do people do with DVDs? Three have been so badly scratched that they just couldn’t be watched past the scratched part. My husband’s theory is that people have trained their sharp-toothed dogs to insert the disc into the player. “In’t that cuute? Ole Fang’s a smart one, alright!”

We’ve been with Netflix for a long time. We have never had a DVD that didn’t play, but have had 3 lost in the mail. We’ve never had any hassle about replacements. Ironically, “The Stepford Wives” was lost twice! After years of awful service from local Blockbuster stores in several places that we’ve lived, we’ve had no desire to switch from Netflix.

Okay, new qustion. Those of you with Netflix, which plan do you have? Is the three at once necessary (I don’t have time to watch movies that often.) Would the one at a time make me crazy? Any thoughts? Thanks!

I was all ready to sign up with netflix when I decided to browse both sites again and realized that netflix doesn’t have games. While my guys usually just play computer games, when friends come over they’ll get out the gamecube (I think it’s a gamecube) and play that. Of course, older son could just go to Blockbuster himself and get a game and I certainly wouldn’t want a game in the que if I was waiting on a movie. How does that work anyway, do you pick 5 movies and then they send you the next one when one comes back or do you pick one each time? And as a tag on to Garland’s question - can you change your plan if you find you want to upgrade or downgrade?

As I said earlier, I have Netflix, but if you don’t watch many movies the blockbuster one out at a time for $9.99/month may make more sense.

Each month, in addition to your mailer DVDs, you will receive two coupons for in store game or movie rentals. Niether Blockbuster nor Netflix rent games by mail.

If you have kids with game systems and don’t wathc DVDs that much, this may be the best option.

As an aside, does anyone know anything about the posting counter here at CC? Mine has been stuck on 22 posts for weeks.

Apply code AMXHOLIDAY for a free month of DVD rentals at Blockbuster.com. New customers only.

The counter does not reflect any posts on either of the Cafes. That is because Cafe posts are by definition off-topic. Perhaps that explains what is (not) happening. Any posts you make on the College Admissions, College Search, etc. forums (fora?) will increase the count.

Garland, one at a time might work for you if you only watch a movie once a week, and count the occasional week of 2 movies as a rarity. Remember that the post office doesn’t pick up or deliver on Sunday. And I think one at a time wouldn’t work at all if you ever got out a TV show. I, at least, don’t watch a full disc of a Tv show even over a week. There’s typically 4-6 episodes per disc, which takes 2-4 weeks to get around to!

The three disc plan works for us.

Kathiep, the way it works is, Netflix just sends whatever is next in your queue. You can reshuffle your queue as much as you want, and have it be as long as you want. When they get a disc back, they just send the first item in your queue. And yes, I’m sure you can change plans up or down after you’ve tried it and found that you’ve either got too many or too few discs at a time.

Jem, thanks for the info about the post count! I guess I’ll just have spend more time away from the cosy confines of the Parents’ areas.
