Neuroscience Matches

So far here is my list of schools i am apping to.

Reach: Upenn,Brown,Duke,JHU
Match:Upitt
Safety: Rutgers

im having trouble finding match and safety schools. can anyone advise me where to look? (ive already done a couple searches of these forums and didn’t find what i was looking for.) i may switch out 1 school on my reach list for Amherst. if anyone has any advice on which to take off the reach list or of any to add to the other 2 it would be greatly appreciated.

Quick stat summary:
top 1-2% of my class
4.0 or higher GPA
1210 SATs ( :frowning: )
2 AP Classes Junior year (A and a B)
5 AP Classes this year
have decent ECs, President of a club, VP of another, master conciler of my DeMolay chapter, 1 year of Volleyball
First Gen, Immigrant, Hispanic, worked at a Environmental lab for 3 - 4 months.

any possibility anyone has heard anything about this?

University of Texas at Austin learning and memory research program grows
Tuesday, September 26, 2006

AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Learning and Memory has recruited and hired six top scientists intent upon understanding how the brain processes information, learns and remembers events in our everyday lives.

“There is a need for neuroscience and a demand for a strong neuroscience program at UT,” said Professor of Neurobiology Dan Johnston, who became director of the Center for Learning and Memory (CLM) and the Institute for Neuroscience in 2004.

Johnston said the university has primed itself to become a top-five neuroscience program in the nation within the next five years. CLM’s newest faculty members:

Dr. Richard Aldrich, formerly of Stanford University, studies the molecular mechanisms of ion channel function. Aldrich is the new chair of the Section of Neurobiology.

Dr. Kristen Harris, formerly of Harvard Medical School and Boston University, studies the role of changes in synapse structure and composition in learning and memory. Harris is a professor of neurobiology and retains an adjunct professorship at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Helmut Koester, formerly of the Baylor College of Medicine, studies network activity of neurons using optical imaging and high-speed lasers. Koester is an assistant professor of neurobiology.

Dr. Guosong Liu, formerly of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studies mechanisms regulating plasticity in hippocampal synapses. Liu is an adjunct professor of neurobiology and maintains residence in California.

Dr. Michael Mauk, of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston, studies motor learning in the cerebellum. He is interested in computer simulation of the cerebellum and is working towards building an artificial cerebellum. Mauk will join CLM in 2007.

Dr. Alison Preston, of Stanford University, studies memory in the medial temporal lobe using functional magnetic resonance imaging on humans. Preston will join CLM in 2007.

The Center for Learning and Memory (CLM) was created at The University of Texas by the Provost in 2004 with the vision of establishing a premier and internationally recognized research center that would utilize the collective abilities of accomplished scientists in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, physiology, psychology, pharmacology, engineering, physics, and computer science to elucidate some of the important mysteries into the mechanisms that govern the processes of learning and memory

As I understand that U of Rochester has a strong cognitive sciences/psych dept.

so far here is what ive compiled as possiblilties, for matches or low reaches

Upitt, Colgate, Brandeis and Rochester

i looked up their some of their research pages:

URochester - [Research Opportunities](Undergraduate Research : Undergraduate Programs : Brain and Cognitive Sciences : University of Rochester)

Brandeis - (doesn’t seem to have a undergrad research page)
http://www.brandeis.edu/departments/sheets_07/neuroscience_07.pdf

Colgate - [Colgate: Undergraduate Research](http://www.colgate.edu/DesktopDefault1.aspx?tabid=621&pgID=3070)
[Colgate: Neuroscience](http://www.colgate.edu/DesktopDefault1.aspx?tabid=1937)

im looking for additions, and if anyone knows to what degree undergraduates usually participate in research at these colleges, it would be great to know.

I interned in the neurology dept. of University of Pittsburgh this summer. It was awesome - I would say - check out this school!!!

Great College town area!

yea i went to the city once, during the summer to see a pirates game (they lost lol) it did seem very nice. it gave me the feeling of a city that sprang from the ground tho. it would like Skyscrapers in the middle of no where. thats just my impression.

My son (neuroscience major) had many of these same schools on his list. He also liked UMiami’s program and Wesleyan University.

UMiami is a bit far, (i live in NJ) where did your son end up going?

Brown (PLME)

wow congrats :D

UCSF, maybe? I’m not sure what its academic standards are, but if you’re into the small-scale side of neuroscience (molecular, cellular, genetic, etc) or any of the bioscience it is pretty awesome.

You’ve already got UPitt and Brandeis, that’s good. Boston University has some cool stuff going on.

i was reading up on UC, but i can’t go that far. im trying to stick to a 5 -7 hour radius from South Jersey/Philly (Upitt is about 5 hours from me) . ill check out Boston U, thanks for the tip.
