I’m going to be an incoming freshman at UCLA, and my major is engineering undecided at the moment, but I may declare Chem E or I may even transfer to the college of letters and science and major in neuroscience. I have an interest in both, but I’d like a job in which there isn’t a lot of unhealthy competition yet still pays over 70k. Input and experience would be very helpful.

I would urge you to find out which one interests you more and perhaps attend a few of the intro classes (Neurosci 10 and ChemE 10). In terms of jobs, keep in mind that many jobs relating to neuroscience are mostly in research, which are not particularly high-paying. Private sector pay is much higher and there are many more ChemE jobs than Neuroscience jobs in private industry.
