We were scheduled today to visit StonyBrook University on Long Island at 12:30. Left the house at 9:45 AM. Got to the Staten Island Expressway and traffic was stopped dead. Heard there was an accident/ fuel spill and two lanes were closed. Got off the highway and ventured into Staten Island to find a detour but there was so much traffic there too. Finally decided to turn around and go home. Weather was rainy and wouldn’t be a great day for touring a campus anyway. My S stated that he didn’t want to go to college on Long Island anyway. Go figure…Got home and crossed StonyBrook off the list. Hey- if it’s going to be a hassle getting to a school, why bother.

Anyone else have crazy travel stories that caused you to reconsider a college?

Every single college that requires me (Maryland) driving I-95 or the turnpike through New Jersey to get there is off my own personal list of colleges I would encourage my child to apply to. But that is just me. Fortunately with just one of the three left to get through the application process, we have avoided that particular issue.

My nephew didn’t apply to Fairfield University because he threw up on his tour of the campus.

My H always said that living on Long Island struck him as being a fly in a bottle.

People I know who work at Stony Brook do it this way (Taken from Stony Brook website – note no highway traffic to muss you up):

By Train
Take the Long Island Railroad’s Port Jefferson line from Penn Station in Manhattan to Stony Brook. The LIRR station is at the north end of the campus; bus service to the central campus is provided. Trains to and from Penn generally require transfers at Jamaica or Huntington. Hicksville is also a transfer point on some lines. Find schedule and fare information here.
