<p>Congratultions to your son Martina. We are in MA also and my S will be applying to UMASS Amherst in Sept. I will look forward to any updates you post next year.</p>
<p>Martina, a friend just returned from UMass Amherst and was very impressed!</p>
<p>Well, we are going to two open houses, one for admitted students day and one for the engineering school, so I’ll have plenty to report back on for anyone who’s interested.</p>

<p>I went to visit UMASS Amherst since it was relatively close by and wanted to show my S a small & large as well as CTCL school. We didnt take the tour, but it was really a beautiful campus and nice looking dorms from the outside. It all looked very new and modern. I don’t think he will apply OOS, but it looks a lot nicer than I remember UCONN- our state school. I am hoping to get S back up there, he hasn’t been since a week at soccer camp a few years ago. He was turned off by the cows in the middle of campus, maybe I’ll try a different entrance.</p>
<p>Congrats, Martina! Still waiting, but I have the “March Madness” to keep me occupied, I am a Syracuse alum… S is preoccupied with school work & EC’s. Presently have a college freshman at home for Spring Break. We have hardly seen her, but that is typical.</p>

<p>No, Rodney, I missed the game, due to Concert at the High school! Maybe it is a good thing I didn’t watch that SU-Georgetown game, it probably would have raised my blood pressure significantly! My cardiologist tells me to avoid “stress”, how is that possible with four kids & a passion for college & professional sports? LOL…</p>
<p>Okay, it’s Friday and nothing in the mail. Can I just say grrrrr? Was hoping for a spirit boost here!</p>
<p>We’re definitely right on the same track, CCL. “Please Mister Postman, look and see…is there a fat envelope in your bag for me…”</p>
<p>The good thing is that day by day, disappointing mail call by disappointing mail call, the odds of something happening keep getting better. Time is on our side.</p>
<p>yabeyabe: Do you know anything about school spirit and athletics at Susquehanna? I posted on the SU forum but don’t have too much hope of getting too many responses. DS will potentially be looking at SU, St. Joes and Duquesne and being able to play intramurals and cheer for a well supported athletic program will likely be important to him.</p>
<p>CCL and Nightchef, hang in there! I think good news will come.
Historymom, I know the SU sports intramural program is both very varied (water polo; both indoor and outdoor soccer; both 5 on 5 and 3 on 3 basketball) and very popular. I believe it is described on the website.</p>
<p>Because it is in the middle of nowhere, they know they need to have a lot going on for campus.</p>
<p>I know less about the rooting for their teams, but they do have football (I do not think your other two do), although the others have Division 1 basketball.</p>

Some other thoughts on the 3 schools you mentioned:
- I know little about Duquesne, but do think Pittsburgh is a good college city. I am not sure what Duquesne offers that Pitt does not, and at a much lower price, but it may be easier to get into.
- St. Josephs has a pretty campus, a good graduation rate and loyal alumni. It is rather expensive (I believe 10k or more above Susquehanna). Philly is a very good city. A very, very high percentage of the student body is Catholic and I believe some theology courses are required.m I believe upper classmen are not guaranteed housing.
- Susquehanna has a Lutheran affiliation, but appears to attract many Catholics as well and has a Hillel. The campus is very pretty. The 4 year graduation was ranked first in its admissions category in a survey I saw. It is much smaller than the other two schools (only 2200 students) and stresses its small classes, nurturing environment and high rate of graduates finding jobs. Bassdad is a CC poster who has a child there and shares his thoughts freely if you PM him. </p>

<p>Congrats Martina on your son’s decision! Good luck Shrinkrap’s son on his first SAT! I still remember driving my son to his first and only, arriving at 7 a.m. and watching all the kids marching in with the SAT signs with arrows showing them the way to their almost four hour exam. No wonder S didn’t want to do it again. </p>
<p>Historymom…isn’t your S a freshman? And he knows he wants to go across the country to college? Already? Wow…he and his mom are advance planners!</p>
