New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

Hartwick looks great. Thanks for the tips. Sad about the UVM waitlist…would love to be at accepted student days with you, CTMom! We could commiserate over a glass of chardonnay on Church Street!! At least the parents would be jolly
Staying on the waitlist at UVM might be moot, given the financial end of it, even if he does get accepted.

CCL8- Hartwick’s campus is beautiful (albeit hilly!) and they have a great reputation regionally. Oneonta is a nice college town. Suny Oneonta is right near by, so there are lots of college students in the area. They do give good merit aid too. Good luck!

ctmom, this too shall pass.

Sorry if I’m asking what’s been asked before. What’s wrong with UVM? It is a good school, higher ranked than my state flagship, which has an average GPA of 3.6 for its matriculating freshmen class. Your son should be happy he at least has an acceptance to a good school in hand.

I second what YBA said; sell the school to your son. The fact that he expressed his disappointment openly to you, is a good thing. Just let him go through this emotionally and he’ll bounce back. Since he likes FB and sports, he doesn’t sound like an introvert. My guess is he’ll quickly bounce back and engage himself in a flurry of activities again very soon.

I learned that a boy from S1’s class who is a Siemens Semifinalist with perfect PSAT/SAT and near perfect GPA, captain of the math team and the science bowl team, president of NHS, etc. was rejected by MIT last Sunday. The boy was so devastated that he didn’t show up to school for two days! Apparently he may have only applied to a few super tippy-tops and now he is very worried about not having any acceptance. Your son is in a much better position than this boy.

Talk about not wanting to read other admission threads…I definitely am not happy that I decided to browse UVM…grr…seeing lower stats admits really hurts.
Have a great day everyone. Have to get outside in this sunshine~

Hartwick has a sub-forum here [Hartwick College - College Confidential](Hartwick College - College Confidential Forums)

Hartwick is on my son’s big list.

Pop,

There is NOTHING wrong with UVM! I think it’s a great school.

It’s just that my son doesn’t want to go there, he fell in love with 2 other schools and was told he had a very good chance of being accepted at them.

CClady…I hear you, i had to stop reading the Loyola posts, it was too frustrating.

Sometimes having so much information via the internet is not a good thing.

CClady…where are you reading these UVM stats?

The forum for UVM here is dead.

Just wanted to send some vitual ((hugs)) to CCL, ctmom and their boys. Children’s pain and disappointment is always magnified in their mom’s heart.
I hope that by this time next year the dust has settled, the disappointment forgotten and your sons have settled happily in their respective new schools. I, for one, will be waiting for that report! Meanwhile, know that everyone here is rooting for you to get through this rough patch.

ctmom, here’s one UVM thread. some kids have high stats, some have lower…
it is a great school, no question…and kids do have fun~

On another note, I just called Hartwick College and spoke to a wonderful admissions’ director. He said that they have had over 4K applications this year, up 60% from last year! They are concerned that they will have to waitlist some students who they wish they could offer a spot to. He was really nice, and did say to have my son send an application if he was interested in applying [and do it soon], but did want us to be prepared that waitlisting was a possibility. I believe he also said that this was the first year they’ve done rolling admissions and they are trying to handle this huge influx of applications, but it is new for them as well. I’m glad that I called.

This thread might have some helpful info on it about colleges still accepting applications.

Thanks CClady, and the boy I know at Hartwick is a smart, popular kid, but his grades weren’t the greatest, 2.8 or 2.9, so I think you have a shot to get admitted with merit money (but then I’m obviously clueless since I was so wrong about my own kid).

Good luck anyway, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

And thank you musicmom, I just heard that UVM basketball vs. Syracuse is on network TV tonight, so guess what we’re watching?

S is in a pool so hopefully he’ll be watching with us and rooting for UVM.

Sometime in May a list will be produced and I am sure posted on the CC parents thread of colleges that are still accepting applicants. It is pretty extensive and believe it or not there are some really nice campuses on it.

musicmomz is right about our hearts breaking at least as much as our kids’ do :(

Our son was admitted to Hartwick with $11,000 in merit money. (About 3.2 UW GPA at time of application and 1100/1600 SATs). We visited. Very nice. He liked it quite a bit. I think they are working hard to overcome a reputation as a party school, but that’s based on stuff I’ve read here and there, so don’t take it too seriously. However, they do have relatively low graduation rates (60% for 6 years in 2007).

As I recall if they used a Common App supplement, it was very basic. So it shouldn’t be too hard to shoot an application over.

“My neice went to Clark even though she reportedly ‘hated it’, but did not get accepted to her other choices some years ago. She ended up loving her experience at Clark…”

CCL-- I think you are helping to remind folks that our kids are much more resilient than we give them credit for (dangling participle?–my English teacher mother is now grimacing somewhere). They adapt; not only that, they thrive. I am totally convinced that in general kids get out of their college experience what they put into it. I knew kids in my medical school class who came form Harvard who were no more impressive than some kids who attended “Podunk U.”

Let us know when you son hears from Clark. We are going to be in Worcester on March 26 & 27 for a new student orientation program.

An alternative to Loyola might be St Josephs in Philly–very similar, but easier to get into

Basketball is also strong at St. Joes if the tournament is something he is into.

Oddly enough, Loyola MD and Catholic U are the only Catholic colleges I can think of that have never tried to build a good basketball program to attract students.

No dangling participle, just a sentence ending in a preposition, which is perfectly acceptable English in spite of myths to the contrary–so no grimaces are necessary.

And I agree that kids usually rebound from disappointments like this very well–we just have to give them time to digest and adjust.
