New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

Yay! Glad there’s more good news in this thread :-)

It’s exciting to put the planning and waiting behind you, but then it really starts to sink in. S is really leaving for college in the fall! All of this leading up to now was very abstract to me. A little sobering now.

Anyway, Accepted Students Day for us next Friday - I think I’m as excited as S is! Time to buy the college t-shirts!

Congratulations all around! What good news for those of you that have been waiting to hear. Is anyone still waiting??

My son has now heard from all of the schools he has applied to. He’s happy.

Congratulations potential Clark kids! Will we wind up with 2 kids from this thread at the same school?

Still waiting for news from three schools, but only feeling much suspense about one of them (Skidmore). We’ve made our peace with getting denied at the other two (Tufts & Cornell), though Naviance does suggest he’s got at least a ghost of a chance at Tufts. Cornell was more of a “what the heck, you only live once” kind of thing.

Still waiting on 3 - Clark, Pitzer (Reach) and Whitman (Reach-ey Reach).
But lots of other good options (including Lewis & Clark) if none of these work out.

We are waiting for one more, but very happy about the others.
Possibly attending two Accepted Students Days.

My son just receieved an email from a private OOS school. They want to pay for half of the airfare (up to $200) for an OOS student to fly in and do an overnight. This apparently applies to all OOS students. Very generous offer.

^^Nice. We’re done. All acceptances and one rejection (from an uber reach where rejection was pretty much expected). All finaid packages are received. Son2 is happy. Still conflicted about choice one or choice two. We’re going to sit together this weekend and I’m going to crunch numbers and he’s going to go back through course catalogues, websites, etc. We may revisit one of the two colleges before we write the deposit check. Fun times.

One tool I have found may be helpful in comparing schools is the Facebook pages for the classes of 2014. How the kids present themselves (including responses to roomate surveys) can be interesting. It can also be a helpful reminder for kids about the lack of confidentiality online.

^^my daughter’s “final decision” back in 2008 was based on the Facebook page of her classes at her two schools…after she did all the rest; accepted student days, visit classes, etc…

One of her two remaining choices (higher ranked by a mile) was not welcoming at all…(and we let her make the decision without our input)…the Facebook page for that particular school was littered with kids asking about stats; but not the kind we on CC would think…I’ll let your imagination figure that one out!!

Thrilled for all the good news this weekend. Now onto decisions!

Thanks, everyone. Funny Nightchef, I hope they heat the rooms, too! Tomorrow we spend the day at Roger Williams for Accepted Student Day. The next few weeks will be decision time…I hope my son gets a good feeling to help him decide. I’m sad that some of the schools are just not looking so good basically because of their high tuitions, and low financial aid packages. We may not return even to re-visit. C’est la vie.
Going to be a pro at this by son #3!!
Have a great weekend, everyone. Exciting to finally have some news to share with everyone.
ps: I have a friend who’s daughter was just waitlisted at an elite college. I feel so badly, as it is their first time around and she’s kind of crushed, and has a few more days to hear about the rest. Different scenario from our thread for sure, but still made me a little sad what they were going through.

Capecod-you are a pro. We visited one of my son’s choices last weekend. I pulled out my folder (complete with spreadsheet) when we met with a counselor. She immediately said “I can see you are experienced with this process”. The second time around in the college search was easier. I kind of wish I had a third child to use all of this knowledge with!

Congrats to all of the new Clarkies-to-be! My D and I were at the admitted student program with weekend, and happy to report that Clark is still as cool as ever!

Ha, that’s great Hornet! And you are joking about doing it a 3rd time, right??
ClarkAlum, sounds great…we don’t get to visit Clark for a few weeks. Glad it’s still cool. Did they roll out the red carpet for you guys??

S2 received acceptances from Pitzer and Clark this weekend. No money from either, which makes them higher cost than his other choices (especially Pitzer!) Both of these schools are an excellent fit for his academic interests and personality.

He’s still waiting on Whitman, and then he’ll choose two for admitted students’ days. Hopefully his final 2 won’t be on opposite coasts!

Congrats on the additional acceptances. It’s great to have so many people getting good news.

kathiep - Marist is supposed to have a great computer science program with fabulous internships. I believe that they have a 100% job placement at graduation. High Point is also supposed to have a great program.

I agree with WB about Marist and computer science. They seemed to have a relationship with IBM when we looked into Marist. Beautiful campus btw!

We just recently visited High Point University and were “wowed” by all we saw. After we left, my husband and I had an uneasy feeling that there’s something going on behind the glitz. Is there a strong religious influence here in the teaching–sort of a “just drink the juice and all will be fine” kind of evangelism going on? Is it in the classroom?

Also, regarding reputation, I just can’t get an answer about the success of their graduates: what graduate schools do students go to? What percent of graduates go?

Also, regarding religion, do non-Christian’s feel welcomed and assimilated there? What is the jewish population?

If anyone can shed some light on these issues, we’d be very appreciative.
