High Point - as per US news the 6 year graduation rate is 52%.

yeah–I did see this and it was quite concerning…

We have heard alot of great things about High Point but haven’t seen it yet- I was told that they got a new president about 3 years ago and he has turned it around and the school has an incredible reputation-I have friends who live nearby and they say it’s a great school- plan to get up there this summer.

Yes, I had the same uneasy feeling about High Point. We visited while attending a soccer tournament. From what I hear, the college has recently undergone a complete renovation. The grounds are spectacular, bronze statues, fountains, hammocks draped between perfectly placed trees. There was a chain restaurant steakhouse in the student union building. It felt like a Stepford College, all glitz and no soul.

I’ve heard mixed messages about HP also. We’re going to visit Friday morning so I’ll let you know our take when we get back! We’ll have three others to compare it to too so that will help.

I have gotten this feeling from the posts that I have read. It also seems as though there are some very loyal fans of this school. Search and read some of the posts on cc.

I have never visited this school, but we did look into HP. dfedder, I will send a PM to you.

Kathie, enjoy your trip!

So far I count 4 or 5 potential Clark students. My S will be one of the Clarkies. I had better start knitting red and black woolie underwear, incase the heating is minimal! lol

This weekend, I talked with a girl, friend of S, who was accepted ED. She was very excited about the admitted student day she had just attended. S has visited several times and I am hoping he will want to attend the next admitted student day, so I can stop at a Trader Joe’s. There aren’t any near us (yet). Many reasons to choose Clark!!

Hi all, happy to see all the wonderful acceptances on the thread!

Son is trying to decide between Penn State and Maryland. He is leaning heavily towards Maryland but is going to both admitted students’ days this month and doing overnights on campus as well. Anyone else’s kid headed for a big school?

I would study HP very carefully. It is not considered one of the better private schools in NC. However, like Elon University was a number of years ago, it could be in the midst of huge changes. Elon was not a well regarded school 20 years ago but now enjoys an excellent reputation. The transformation of that school has been phenomenal. maybe the same for High Point?

Congrats, Merlin. My son is a potential future Clarkie. Still working on those decisions. We don’t have Accepted Student Day for a couple of weeks, so it may come down to that day. [stress] Wish we didn’t have to wait so long. Having just been to a full day at RWU this weekend, it would be nice to have them back to back. Plus we have the others to re-visit, too. It all comes down to best school, combined with best financial sense. Will definitely look for you again, once my son decides. There are some folks active on the Clark board if you want to connect.

Ready to Roll - S is headed to UMass Amherst - he got into the engineering program, and the price is right. He wanted a big school. He wanted urban too, but the school is so big it’s like a city. And skiing’s not too far away.

hornet and anyone else what do you know about Coastal Carolina? It was listed on a college board search for my son and looks intriguing because of the coastal access and the fact that they offer SCUBA, not as a major but as an activity and S loves to dive.

CapeCodLady8 - My S was unable to attend RWU accepted students day. What did you think? What did your son think?

historymom, here are a couple of past discussions:

Just as the title states…anyone’s child attending a University in Europe?

My S is spending a semester outside of Venice through the University of Iowa.

ne mom thanks. Doesn’t seem too well respected at this point does it? I do wonder how much is based upon first hand and how much is snobbery and prejudice based on selection criteria.

I have a question about doing searches on CC. When I typed in “Coastal Carolina” I got 6 bazillion hits which contained the words “Carolina” This has happened before, particularly when looking threads about less well known schools. Any advice on filtering?

I no absolutely nothing about Western Carolina, so I cannot comment personally about this school at all. The only thing that I can say is that I have heard of it.

The way that I pulled up these threads, and I would bet there are many more threads about Western Carolina (just did not look further), is by clicking “search” on the top of this page. Next I typed in Western Carloina, in quotes. The little blue dot was on “show threads”. Then I just clicked on “go”. I did not use the google cc search for this.

marina99, my daughter had the exact same impression of UMass Amherst. She had toured Northeastern and loved it, then we drove out to Amherst… she kept saying skeptically, “All I see is cows and trees…” then we came over a hill and saw the 22 story UMass Library tower and she said, “Cool.” And as we walked around on tour she said, “This FEELS urban. There’s SO many people here.” She liked it a lot more than she thought she would (although in the end she decided to attend a smaller college. where the weather is warmer).

Hey Mary Ann,
RWU Accepted Students’ Day was great. I really do get a good feeling about the place. The president really gave an entertaining and engaging speech in the morning. I continue to be impressed by some of the faculty and their commitment to the students. The dorms were fine, the location amazing, and they did wow some with the chocolate fountain and coffee at the end of the day. Every student and parent we spoke to that day really loved RWU, even ones we bumped into at the fish garden…we joked that they must have been ‘plants’ by the university!
All in all, they did Accepted Students’ Day well…
our goal is that our son find the right fit for him. We have a few more re-visits left, not to mention hearing back about financial aid!
Best,
