what does this mean?! i thought that ED @ rice was in the range of 32% acceptance! how do they know who has commited? why does it say 2010 app. data?

hey check this out: NY times reports that exactly 1000 applied ED this year to RICE.
Exactly 1000. Coincidence? I think not. This even number is jinxed XD

Mom of applicant is on pins and needles. Come on Wednesday, 5pm central. Just spoke with Rice Admissions and that is the scheduled decision release time. Tom Petty is right: the waiting is the hardest part!!!

@bigtrueba : I know. At the campus visit we were told 1/3 of applicants typically were accepted ED, and it went down to around 1/4 at regular decision. That visit was spring break last year. ED would have already happened. Maybe the person giving the presentation was not informed of the new statistic. Think of it, 3/4 of the applicants who want Rice so badly they are willing to commit to ED are were rejected or deferred last year. OUCH!

@Antarius: We were told at our visit that the class sizes were increasing, so there would be more spots open this year than before. How many spots are open to fill at ED? 250? 300? 400? How big is the overall freshman class (Fall 2011) expected to be?

eaglemom - the freshman size has been capped. Last years class of some 950 something students is the max. For the last 3 years we have been admitting more people to increase the class size (with the 2 new colleges).

I believe that this year onwards, the freshman class will be from 900-950 students.

So, by last year’s statistics, perhaps around 225-237 will be admitted via early decision. I hope that all 1000 of these fine young folks are admitted to the college that fits them best.

Does anyone know why the numbers are different that what was reported in the Thresher last year?

Pool of prospects expands
Number of potential early decision applicants increases

PrintEmailArticle ToolsPage 1 of 1 With the passing of the Nov. 1 deadline for early decision this year, it has become clear that the number of applicants is once again increasing.

Although regular decision applications are not due until Jan. 2, 2010, Vice President for Enrollment Chris Mu

I am sure the folks at Rice Admissions and Financial Aid are working very hard to make fair decisions and find the best matches for Rice and for the students.

In the (unlikely) event that the announcements are released prior to 5pm on the 15th, can you please let us know, Antarius, so that email/Esther is checked timely?

Antarius, thanks ever so much for your patience and for answering our questions! Rice is by far the best and most organied application experience we have had.
