New American Idol Thread for AI Season 12

Angie!! Best so far, I think. She is so good. And MUCH better hair than before, not to be trivial.

And Devin too, great! Military school, seriously? Who woulda thought that one.

What’s up with Lazaro saying that he had to change his song the day before the performance?? He certainly did not do well tonight… but if he had to abandon whatever song he had been working on… then that is a partial explanation.

Maybe, jmmom. But the only reason one would abandon a song was because it sounded bad. If it was worse than this one was, yikes!

Results announced-- Aubrey won the sing-off.

Enjoying the back stories of each performer’s family. Forgot Kree had lost both her parents while in her teens. Gut-wrenching!

The judges are rotating who goes first after each performance. About time…

It’s Beatles night. Burnell sang “Let It Be” He never heard the song before and barely heard of the Beatles. Now I’m really feeling old!?

Mariah got to go first after Lazaro’s performance. She had a blank slate in which to critique a really bad performance on all levels. She totally did a Paula Abdul on him and sugar-coated her comments! If he’s not in trouble on Thursday night after THIS painful performance, I’m picking him to be in the finals.

Jimmy Iovine adds so much to the show. Glad they aren’t using different guest mentors each week.

I feel Lazaro needs to go home before Paul, but it will probably be Paul on the chopping block this week.

I would like to have heard Angie sing “Yesterday” (MY personal favorite Beatles song of all time!) from behind her piano.

I don’t have a clear-cut fave tonight, but I’m going to give Kree all 50 of my votes since she had to sing from the “dreaded” first spot.

Lazaro and Paul should be in trouble, along with one “surprise”-- perhaps Amber or Devin?

Probably right, jshain. But I don’t think there will be three guys in the bottom, with only four left. Thinking the surprise might be Candice or Kree. Sorry…just with Kree going first, serious country competition with Janelle, and others doing so well. She might need your 50 votes this week.

Lazaro should go home first, but I think he will get many sympathy votes. He seems like such a sweetheart. Paul should get many votes from older women, as it seems to be a voting pattern on idol. He just doesn’t come across as heterosexual, which I could care less about, but I suspect it might hurt him with the demographic that might vote for him based on being an attractive white guy.

I’m betting that if either Kree or Candice is the low vote-getter on Thursday, the judges will use their save. If Lazaro is NOT in the bottom 3, this could happen.

I hope they would. One of those two guys definitely needs to go home first. The rest are all so good.

Like busdriver, I am very uncomfortable watching Lazaro sweat and cry. He is adorable and seems like such a sweet guy, but his vocals are nowhere near any of the the others. Devin is my favorite boy, and I hope he doesn’t go home before his time. I thought Paul did a good enough job, but I agree he is a little (or a lot) feminine and might not appeal to the voting demographic. I had never heard the song Amber sang before, but I find it hard to believe that ANYONE has never heard Let It Be.

Loved the show because of the Beatles songs; I was a big fan and enjoyed all the arrangements except Lazaro’s, who seemed like he was rushing it. Too bad. Guess it also made me feel old to realize the contestants were years from being born even when the Fab Four broke up, but glad that the music is still alive and appreciated by so many. Also was glad to see the rotation in starting judging comments, and hope they keep it up.

I’m wondering if Lazaro is having communication probs due to the language barrier - not his stuttering, but it clearly appears that at home English is not the family’s first language. HE should sing a song in Spanish - he might be totally more comfortable! (of course, I don’t actually want to see Spanish songs on AI…)

I might be in the minority but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Burnell. I love his tone, his phrasing, his hand movements, his look - goosebumps.

Last night Burnell and Amber were tops for me.

“Lazaro and Paul should be in trouble, along with one “surprise”-- perhaps Amber or Devin?”

I think that counts as very close to nailing it, jshain.

Though for those who haven’t seen the results yet, don’t consider that a spoiler alert. I could be completely bsing.

Did anyone catch that Jimmy Iovine said that he had worked with Lazaro on his song 5 days prior, but Lazaro still implied he changed songs at the last minute?

I love Jimmy, but Jimmy seemed to be trying to cover his/AI’s behind on a couple instances last night. He also made some comments about Amber and her song choice - something about they did not choose it for her, she made the choice.

Lazaro seemed to re-mention it last night - saying that he will choose “songs he likes, not songs someone picks for me” kind of thing.

I don’t want to hear any whining from AI about Lazaro hanging on when he shouldn’t. While I’ll agree that he has not been performing well, the AI machine MILKED his story and set out to appeal to the heartstrings of America - and it worked!

There always seems to be someone who makes it way into the top ten because of their story or personality, not talent. AI should be careful about pushing people who aren’t as good, because they just might end up with a winner who can’ sell a record.

That first shot they showed of Jimmy biting off his assistant’s head made him seem like a real jerk. Surprised they showed it.

Was so looking forward to AI on Wednesday night because they were doing Motown, my favorite music of all time. I came away disappointed. I thought most of the song choices were poor, especially with Candice’s opening number of “Heard It Through The Grapevine.” I thought she could have done so much more with a song like “Chain of Fools”, rather than the song she sang. Candice could be in the bottom 3 this week and, for me, this would be a major surprise. Lazaro was better this week than last, and he wasn’t in the bottom 3 last week, so I think he goes through. Angie had a major stumble this week and is probably in the bottom 3, joined by Devin, whom I feel got overly-lavish praise-- again.

So many great Motown hits were left in storage tonight…

The Candace love by the judges/producers (especially Randy) is really evident to me - she has a good voice, but not my cup of tea.

It was great to see Lazaro sing a song with confidence - he worked the stage a little, and seemed happier. Vocally better, but not up to par with the others IMO. However, I believe it will be his performance in the trio at the end that will vote him out tonight - he totally screwed up and was a fish out of water. I could see him mouthing the words when it wasn’t even his turn to sing. Nicki was WAY over harsh on those three - how awkward and embarrassing. It’s clear the boys are fighting for a chance to stay against those girls - no need to make them feel even MORE inferior!!!

I personally thought Angie kind of tanked last night - I put her in my bottom three with Lazaro and Devin (who I like but don’t think he’ll get votes to stay out of the bottom three)

I agree with you, abasket. Though I didn’t hear Candace, she should have chosen a song that was perfect for her. Didn’t hear Lazaro either, but he really screwed up on the trio. Nicki was completely unfair in her critique, as the other guys did great, and she should have called Lazaro on it, not all of them. Really rude. I thought Angie definitely blew it, though she’s usually fantastic, she needs to stick to what she’s good at it, not show us that she’s “having fun”. Who cares about that, just impress us!

I thought Amber was amazing, Kree not as good as usual. Devin is just great, but he needs to find a way to put emotion on his face, he always looks too blank and stoic. People want to see more. Burnell sounds fantastic, but there’s a way he enunciates his words sometimes that just seems weird to me. I can’t put my finger on it, but it seems with a little more practice and if someone points it out to him, he could be very smooth and soulful. As if I know what I’m talking about, ha!

Okay, jshain, you pegged it last time…do you agree with abasket, or who’s in your bottom three and going home?

I’m thinking (hoping) that Devin is going home and the judges keep their save. In the event that Candice is in the bottom 3 with the fewest votes, the judges will use their save.

Alrighty then. And who else in the bottom three?

^Devin, Angie, and Candice or Janelle. I’m thinking Lazaro gets to sit down (again), so someone who doesn’t deserve to be in the bottom 3 will be. Candice got all 50 of my votes this week, even though she should have sung Aretha and NOT Marvin Gaye!

Edit: I guess it’s apparent that I didn’t read any spoilers!
