I went to youtube to check out some pre-american idol footage of Adam. He can belt out a song but it’s all so corny. It’s like he tries s hard to be “different” that he’s on the verge of being corny. I know this is going to sound weird but to me he’s seems like a combination of a drag queen and Freddie Mercury of Queen. I honestly don’t think many people still go out and buy Queen CD’s. Their time came and went and I can’t see that type of music being very commercial today.

I thought last night’s show was terrible. They were off key. Why in the world do these contestants still choose signature songs by major artists? Stay away from Michael Jackson songs! Why did that other guy try to pull off one of Cold Play’s most popular songs? It was all just so wrong.

I agree that Adam is very stylized, both in his performance and in his look. Whether that appeals to the people who vote, I guess we’ll have to wait til tonight to see.

As for Queen, the popularity of their music hasn’t disappeared. Their music continues to be a good seller on itunes and the musical that is based on the music of Queen, We Will Rock You, has been produced in countries all around the world for the past seven years and is still going strong. The show draws fans young and old, and trust me, it’s just for the music.

Adam was definitely number 1 in our house last night! D had me vote for him for 15 minutes (who knows how many times!). I love his voice and think that he is a polished performer and since he certainly knows how to sing correctly this will help in the future if he makes it through. So many of the people who make it on AI don’t have any prior vocal coaching and they struggle as the weeks go on keeping there voices healthy and strong.

Adam grew up here in San Diego so we have two people from here on AI this year. Next week Arianna (think she is 17) will be on and we have seen her perform in local theatre here in town.

I like Adam and I think he will grow as the show goes on. As he said last night, there is a huge difference between theater and TV. Although, I think he should have chosen another song last night.
I don’t know about anyone else but I saw the Stones live several times from ages 17-25 and no one will do that song like Mick. I remember being 17 and he was probably 41 but I still thought he was unbearably sexy. When I told my DD that last night, I thought she would say “gross Mom” but she said “well, duh Mom, he IS Mick Jagger.”

“I honestly don’t think many people still go out and buy Queen CD’s. Their time came and went and I can’t see that type of music being very commercial today.”

I obviously worded this wrong because now I see how my original message didn’t clearly express my point. Of course, Queen is classic. Everyone loves the original and the classic Freddie Mercury and Queen. My feeling is that a new artist(such as Adam) or band in that style will simply be looked at as a copycat. There will only be one Queen and one Freddie Mercury.

LOL: my teenager went out and bought a couple of Queen CDs. Not “downloaded”, but “bought”. I asked why she wanted another piece of plastic to litter her shelves. “Mom, but it is Queen!” Here, Queen seems to be very popular with kids of her age.

I found last night’s show very boring. Lots of bad singing. H, who was singing when he was in college, could not stand it.

I just want to be clear that I’m not knocking musical theater. I love musical theater. I have a completely different standard for AI though and it’s just what I look for. I personally haven’t seen that background transfer well to AI and sometimes it is that they are too well trained and disciplined and seem to be in character. That is how Adam struck me - like he was doing a role that was well choreographed and staged, but lacked soul, for lack of a better word. I also love Queen and my daughter still loves Queen, and maybe being lead singer of a show band would work well. It would be tough though, because he would look like he was impersonating Queen, and as good as he is, he’s no Freddie Mercury. I love Adam’s stuff on YouTube - he sings some original stuff too and he fits well into the cabaret setting. His voice is heads and tails above the others so far, but IMO, for AI, he’d do better with a little less mugging and a little less cabaret. He could very well let go and do it. I never thought Katherine McPhee, Constantine or Tamyra was successful at it, but Jennifer Hudson did it.

Quick question. DH and I are debating. One of us thinks Megan is pregnant. One of us thinks it’s just the clothes she’s wearing. Anyone care to weigh in?

The one they kept saying was very pretty. Long blonde, wavy/curly hair. Wore a white dress with weird flowers on the front and has tatoos up her right arm. Now as to what song she sang???

cartera, I had to smile last night when, in the pre-song interview, Adam made a comment about how he’d have to tone things down because of the difference between performing on stage in theatre and performing for the camera in the Idol setting. If that was ‘toning it down’, I can’t imagine what it would have been like had he not done so! Personally, I would love to have seen him sing a ballad. He’s done Queen, Cher, and the Rolling Stones and it’s time for something less ‘showy’.

Agreed Alwaysamom - he has a nice version of a Five for Fighting song on You Tube. On the video, he is wearing a tee shirt and jeans - that’s how he should dress for it too. He also does Dust in the Wind - hopefully he won’t choose that.

audiophile, while it may be true that some of those individuals could be considered stunt casting to an extent (particularly Taylor Hicks in Grease), that simply isn’t true of most of them. Stunt casting is more when you bring someone into a show like Melanie Griffith, with her limited talent but big name, who was brought into Chicago, a show which, by the way is famous for stunt casting. Most AI contestants are not famous enough to be considered candidates for stunt casting, nor are most lacking sufficient talent to be able to perform the roles for which they’ve been cast.

The reality is that most AI contestants will never achieve fame in popular music. I don’t think that was the point of the whole theatre discussion, at least the one that I was trying to make, which was that the judges often dismiss contestants as ‘too musical theatre’ with the insinuation that it isn’t possible to be good at both.

There was a girl from Penn State MT who auditioned a couple of years ago who didn’t make it through from the finals. I thought she was good - but she was put in a group that was distracted by overly involved parents and I think she lost her focus.
