I’m thinking about getting the newly released Droid smart phone with Verizon (my current carrier) or buying an iphone, but I would have to switch to AT&T.

Any thoughts on this?

The Droid cannot be used overseas. Internet connection is supposed to be great. While the iphone is well designed and has been around a some time, I’m worried about switching to AT&T.

It is a good ting that it cannot be used overseas. You would not want to end up with a heart attack-inducing phone bill. Overseas you need an unlocked phone and a local simcard.

Here is an article comparing both feature-by-feature:

There are things I like better about the Droid Eris than the Droid. The Eris looks and feels more like the iphone; I like it’s smaller size, the look and some of the features. It does not have a slide out keyboard like the Droid has.

Anyone have any opinions about how hard it is to getting used to not having a keyboard available?

I’m going to the mall to take a closer look at both phones. Thanks for the links! If they were both Verizon, I would not be conflicted. I would buy the iphone just because it is user friendly and proven in the market. I don’t enjoy spending hours fiddling around with a techno-gadget. However, neither do I enjoy having dropped calls and no/slow coverage. I plan to use the smart phone for internet and emails while traveling, so I would like fast reliable service.

They are both great products but the truth is that in two years the Droid will be well ahead of the iphone. The Droid already has 10,000 available apps which is so many more than anyone needs that the number of apps between the iphone and droid is not an issue. Droid is the future; iphone is the past.

I’ve been wondering what extras you would have to add, at what cost (to a Verizon plan that currently includes high # of minutes and unlimited texting) to take advantage of the Droid.
Have any of you researched this? I’ve considered this phone as a gift to my s & d but not if I have to add considerable $ to our family plan.

jasmom, I checked on that question yesterday at a Verizon store. Right now, my D and I share a Verizon plan with 700 minutes (which we never use since she prefers text to talk), plus she has about 4000 texts/pictures for a total of about $90 before taxes. To use two Droids with 450 minutes (plus unlimited Verizon to Verizon) and unlimited texts and email for both of us would cost $160 per month before taxes. Or at least that’s what my understanding was - they make it so complicated.

Also, they said that I could get a Droid for $150 since I’m due for the every two year phone thing. I’m not sure how much her Droid would cost since they usually give her less of an allowance as the second phone on a share plan.

^^^ Agreed they do make it way too complicated.

I have 4 phones on a family plan, 700 call minutes and unlimited texting. If I upgraded to the Droid that would be $199 after rebate for the phone itself (I’m eligible for an upgrade) and an additional $30 per month for my phone for the data plan (did I say that right? that’s for internet access).

Puzzled and momlove, Thanks! Of course that raises a lot more questions (it’s even tough to BUY technology!) but if gives me a jumping off place.

My middle ds wants a Droid for Christmas. He’s soon to be 14, but has many friends with Iphones and I think he’s entranced by them. It’s funny because he asked me if that would be out of the price range for Christmas and I said I didn’t know. He said,“Well how much are they?” I explained that it depended where we were on our "new every two"plan, and that we might need to pay an extra monthly fee or to upgrade and he said,“Well how much is that?” Ah, the simplicity of a child…

If you do not want to be slammed for international roaming, disable it. Simple as that.

Re Droid and taking advantage of your current plan, you better get a data plan if you want to fully take advantage of smartphone features (and not get slammed by a huge bill not for roaming, but for alacarte data usage)

I am due for a new phone in March…my H looked briefly at the Droid when he was in a Verizon store this weekend…my thing is I don’t want to add any more expense to our already (IMO) hefty phone bill (4 phones, unlimited texting). I do like the option of some internet though, so I think I am going to replace my Ipod shuffle with an Itouch and just keep a simpler phone. The Itouch will allow me many cool apps, be my music player, my calendar and provide internet connection at home, work and some places when out and about. I think that will be enough for me.

I currently use a blackberry. Verizon has a good network here and also where my son attends college.
Does anyone know how the Droid does with email? i like that I can open word and other office attachments with blackberry email. I believe that you can’t do that with an iphone (not sure). I would not want to lose email functionality…

abasket - that’s a solution I hadn’t thought of - keep a non-smart phone plus an itouch for internet. I am due for a new phone in December and, although I covet an iphone, I’m really reluctant to trade my excellent Verizon service and coverage for spotty ATT coverage. I had been holding out for the Blackberry Storm 2 - does anyone know how it compares to the Droid?
