New chancellor coming to UIUC

University of Illinois officials have chosen University of Washington Provost Phyllis Wise as the next chancellor and vice president of the Urbana-Champaign campus, filling the top campus position after nearly two years of interim leadership.</p>

<p>She would begin Oct. 1 and earn a salary of $500,000 a year, up from her predecessor’s salary of $395,500. She also would be eligible for a $500,000 retention-incentive bonus if she stays for five years.</p>

<p>Wise said in an interview with the Tribune on Wednesday that she is familiar with the financial challenges of public universities after the University of Washington’s state funding has been cut by 50 percent over the last three years.</p>

<p>“All universities are facing the fact that we have to look for alternative sources of revenue. We have to be better at philanthropy; we have to be better at the commercialization of our ideas and more efficient with the money we have,” she said. </p>

<p>The U. of I.'s former chancellor, Richard Herman, resigned in fall 2009 following a scandal over the campus’s admissions practices. … a search has been under way for the top campus position since then. Robert Easter has been the interim chancellor.</p>

<p>Wise was dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California at Davis before going to the University of Washington. She has a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a doctorate from the University of Michigan.
