We always talk about what books we want our kids to read. What do your kids want YOU to read? Do they have favorites? Recommendations to you?
I have a reading list provided by my kids starting with Ender’s Game. Others?

I’ve read most of the YA Fiction that my daughter reads. Books she would suggest are:
Harry Potter books (of course)
Percy Jackson books
Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Anything by John Green, including podcasts

I agree with all of the above ^ and:
The Hunger Games Trilogy
Legend (and follow-up books) by Marie Lu
City of Bones saga by Cassandra Clare
John Green, but particularly The Fault in Our Stars.

I would agree with all of those listed so far and add the following (recommended by S):
The His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman
The Redwall series by Brian Jacques
Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud
Eragon series by Christopher Paolini
The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix
Inkheart etc. by Cornelia Funke

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books

The kids like the series. Maybe if you post in the high school life forum? You might get some kids to answer.

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid is a classic book that I have been recommended by high school and college peers. I read some of it and I love what I read. Maybe I should get my own copy and actually finish it…

My kids often tell me something good they’ve read…Their favorites that come to mind are

The Gates by John Connolly , which somehow manages to be really scary and hilarious, too
Mountains Before Mountains and Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder
Cory Doctorow books
Lamplighter trilogy by DM Cornish
The Things They Carried
Nickled and Dimed
Mortal cities series by Philip Reeve
Jeff Smith’s Bone
Moneyball
both loved Tintin, John Bellairs, Jack Prelutsky and Margaret Haddix as elementary students, too…

My mom and I have really different literary tastes but in general I’d recommend:

The Handmaid’s Tale. I’m trying to get my parents to read it, but no luck (yet).
Or anything by Margaret Atwood.
The Genesis of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks (loved most of the trilogies in the Shannara series but Genesis was my favorite).
Castor Chronicles (begins with Beautiful Creatures).

My older son loves Tamora Pierce, Garth Nix (Sabriel, Liriel etc), the Mage World Books, the Liaden series by Sharon Lee and Steven Miller and the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMasters Bujold. (I love all of them too, though we disagree about which Tamora Pierce books are best - I like Tortal books better than the Magic Circle books.)

Younger son is more into sci fi. He likes David Weber’s Honor Harrington books, the Star Wars books (especially certain authors) and the Elizabeth Moon sci fi books. I liked the earlier Honor Harrington books and like all of Moon’s sci fi and most of her fantasy.

The only book that D’s ever really pushed on me is House of Leaves. It was cool but hard work, and by far the strangest book I have ever read.

My D’s tastes run to things she can identify with. She’s not a fan of fantasy or sci-fi (didn’t like Harry Potter, won’t read Hunger Games). She did like the Hatchet series though, even though the idea of living in the wild would give her nightmares. She likes biographies-loved “The Black Girl Next Door” so much she wrote to the author. She suggested I read and compare “I’m Down”, about a white girl growing up in the black community (sort of) and “The Girl Who Fell From the Sky”, about a black girl raised in a white community and having to move to a black one.

She recently told me I should re-read To Kill a Mockingbird. When younger she read a number of Newberry books and winners of the Coretta Scott King award books.

S has loved:

The Kite Runner
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Great Gatsby
The Devil in the White City
Harry Potter series
Hunger Games

A Song of Ice and Fire is also well-loved among young adults I know.
