New Dishwasher model recommendation?

DO YOU HAVE A NEW DISHWASHER THAT YOU REALLY LOVE AND WANT TO RECOMMEND?

In 1993 we paid an extra $100 to go one step up from basic dishwasher and installed quieter Maytag model. (That was a smart move. The kitchen is adjacent to the family room and TV.) We’ve been very happy with it… I only have to scrape of the large clumps of food… never pre-rinse dishes.

The dishwasher still works fine (except for minor problems, I think related to dishwasher detergent phosphate removal discussed elsewhere). But I do see evidence of ocassional small leaks in the door. So it is time to start looking at replacement units to make sure the wood floor doesn’t get ruined.

Mine is old enough that a specific model recommendation probably wouldn’t be applicable. The one feature that I would beg you to get is the racks that are a hard (nylon?) plastic instead of the soft rubbery stuff over steel. Cookie sheet edges, knives, chipped dishes can all cut through the soft stuff and pretty soon you have big swollen rusty places on the racks that stain the edges of your dishes. Doesn’t happen with the other rack material. I also love my stainless interior (although I hate the stainless exterior - too hard to keep looking nice). No stains, no dull or yellowed places. Just looks new and shiny every day (especially since I sometimes use contraband phosphate detergent…)

Can’t you just put a new gasket around the door?

Our 1995 Maytag is NOT one of the quiet ones. We will be replacing it with either a quiet Whirlpool or a quiet Bosch.

I yearn for dish drawers by Fisher and Paykel, but if you want a normal dishwasher I highly recommend getting a deep floor model. I don’t know what they call it, but the more modern style has the inside floor much lower, and I really miss that now that I’ve moved out of the house that has my dream kitchen.

I would NOT recommend my current GE Monogram. My next one will be a BOSCH. Best value for the buck.

We replaced ours recently, and a requirement for me was that it have a large bar type handle. Our previous model had one of those plastic hand latches under the control panel on the door. It needed to be fixed at least three times over the course of the 8 or 9 years we had it. The plastic latch assembly was flimsy did not hold up well for a household of 6.

please don’t get the Fisher/Paykel drawers! Worst appliance EVER. We had dishwasher repair out no less than ten times in four years and had to have it replaced twice. Finally when they threatened to replace it again, we insisted that the GE owned company replaced it with another product that was NOT manufactured by Fisher. Every repair guy who came out said that they are a nightmare.

My advice is not buy an Energy Star dishwasher or washing machine. The Energy Star rating comes at the cost of efficiency and functionality. Yes, it will use less energy and water BUT it will not work near as well as the older unit it replaces. And running it twice to get acceptable results makes the promised economy a lie. Been there.

toblin…is there a choice? Almost all of the dishwashers we’ve seen have an energy star rating.

Yes, there’re are choices and they all cost less too. Prob: they are not as outwardly stylish (sp).

Hard food disposer or cleanable filter system -opinions?

"Can’t you just put a new gasket around the door? " - Perhaps. We’ll look more at that (not completely sure about where the leak is…but door gasket sounds like a good bet). Checking online, it looks like they are orderable (ie no labor charges needed). Are they easy to replace?

I’d still like to what new models are good, even if the gasket fix works. It’s 17 years old and if real parts start breaking we’d likely not invest in costly repair.

Love, love, love my Miele with the third level utensil tray. We originally went to get a Bosch but liked the interior setup of the Miele better. It is virtually silent.

I absolutely LOVE my 14 year old ASKO;
called a repairman for a leak once, but it was a pipe issue and not the dishwasher at all!

Ah ha…this explains a lot. In December we replaced our 17 year old GE dishwasher with a Kitchenaid Energy Star one. I hate it. Dishes never seem to get clean. I have to practically wash the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. Even then, they still don’t seem too clean when the cycle is done. I’m sure another cycle would finish the job. I want my old GE back!

I left an ASKO at my last house and was going to get another when I moved here. Then a friend told me about the never ending problems she had with hers, a newer model with an electronic control panel. I went with the top of the line Bosch instead. I’ve had it about ten years without a single service call and it is whisper quiet. I never pre-rinse (even things like a pyrex meatloaf pan) and the dishes are always spotless.

My GE Profile is absolutely lousy. It’s another ‘wash before hand if you want your dishes clean’. A lot of the time I simply finish washing and don’t bother with the dishwasher. It does get used since the kids fill it up with glasses. I am having Bosch envy now!

I’m on my second Bosch - both top of the line - this one has the controls inside the upper door edge. Looks great. The first one lasted about eight years and had a variety of out of warranty problems. This one does not thoroughly rinse dishes - a whitish film is left after the cycle. We have tried various rinse agents and detergents, nothing has helped. After several service calls, they can find nothing wrong. My next dishwasher won’t be a Bosch, and I hated my Asko washer and dryer, so I’ll have to find a new brand. I’ll probably look at the Miele.

We installed a Miele at our last house, and we loved it so much that we installed another one at our current house. The Miele is virtually silent, and the three very adjustable interior racks are fantastic. We scrape our dishes and put them right in – no rinsing! We have never had to call for repairs (and the first one we installed was over ten years old before we moved). I would highly recommend Miele dishwashers.
