Put your information into Mapquest and check “avoid highways”. See what it says for time as compared to the highway route.

One caveat for a “flat road Floridian” seeing New England for the first time – our roads are neither flat nor straight. The highway, for the most part will be the most direct route, and it could take simply FOREVER to take the back roads. And more tiring simply because you need to pay particular attention to the road to avoid driving off that cliff!

(Driving from Quebec City home to Connecticut tomorrow … on the highway with stops for Dartmouth and Deerfield!)

Mapquest answer showed an extra 25 miles and an extra hour. Maybe worth it for the scenic factor … but looking at their suggested directions I can’t comment on that. I am much more familiar with the west side of the Connecticut river (i.e. Vermont)

Route 114 goes right through the Goffstown, Henniker area that was hardest hit during the May floods. Many, many roads were washed away, so I think I would avoid that area. The highway route to Hanover is very scenic in itself and provides several overlook rest areas. You could take that and make a detour in the Lake Sunapee region for lunch. The Hanover area will also have great places to explore.

I’ve never taken RT 4 west of Concord and don’t know RT 10 at all. I’m not sure how much time you have or how far off the direct course you want to go, but I think the type of ride you’re looking for can be 101W (Peterborough and Keene have just what you’re looking for) and start heading north there (I’m not sure about the roads) or take 91N (interstate highway) just on the VT side. It’s a roundabout way, but will definitely give you the flavor of NH. Have a great visit.

I’m a great fan of backroads and have driven a number of them in SE NH. Just about any route you take should be nice, with these caveats:

It will take you at least 30 minutes of stop and go traffic to clear the metro area around the airport, epecially afternoon/early evening. It will be 20 miles of strip malls with traffic lights.

All the roads are windy and hilly. Plan to travel no faster than 40 MPH. If you go faster, great, but at least you won’t be pressed for time.

what looks fairly straight on a map may be be twice as long at a more magnified scale. Plan accordingly.

I know this will offend a lot of mapquest fans, but I’ve never found their smidgen of a map to be very useful. IMHO, you would be a whole lot better off buying something like Delorme Street Atlas or Microsoft Maps and Trips. Both will fill your screen and are much more easily zoomable.

If you want online, Google Maps shows more, but not enough detail.

ISACC - head north on RT 3 - highway (or Rt 93 - depending on which direction you leave the Manchester airport) - towards Concord NH from Manchester - Rt 3 murges with Rt 93 - you will go right by the RT 89 exit that takes you directly to Hanover/Lebanon area -but stay on Rt 93N and just after the Concord exits - look for RT 4 - it somewhat parallels RT 89N in a way towards the Hanover/Lebanon area - back country roads - some reall pretty places. If you look at a map you will see that you have a choice to stay on Rt 4 or to follow Rt 4A around the Andover, NH area - both will end you in Lebanon, NH - across the river from Hanover. Plan on extra time tho - Happy back-road traveling.

The airport in Manchester is right off the highways in that area.

If you want to see some really pretty mountain area exploring - you can follow Rt 4 out of Hanover - go west - will take you to Quechee Gorge - beautifl - and Woodstock, VT - great shops and restaurants - and then thru the Green Mountains of VT - Beautiful!!! The area around Rt 4 and Rt 100 junction is awesome - about 45 minutes to an hour from Hanover - good restaurant there - The Back Behind Saloon.

I would recommend stopping by St. Paul’s School in Concord after leaving Manchester. Concord is a short drive north of Manchester and then you could proceed to Hanover from Concord.

St. Paul’s in my view is by far the most beautiful prep school in New England - over 2000 acres. It’s like a small town.

I don’t know backroads, but if you get to North Conway, eat a Nadia’s Trattoria. It has been at least 10 years, but it was the most amazing Italian seafood ever.

We stopped in Hanover yesterday on our drive from Canada to Connecticut. It was pouring rain, but a gorgeous campus, friendly people in shops etc. Many people out and about – mostly looking like well dressed parents with Ivy hopeful kids!

We enjoyed the Dartmouth Bookstore with its Starbucks coffee bar (and sandwiches), saw the under-renovation football stadium, and got back on the road.

cnp 55 shame it was raining it is a pretty campus and well be there
next weekend hope it cools down we dont want the 90s we always have in florida in july

next time try the dirt cowboy for a coffee urge…first store
out of campus

still debating which scenic route to take …we have 4 hours to kill
so no rush manchester airport to hanover
