New I Phone

Sorry Thumper-- often, when I start a new thread, some one says, there is already an open one on the same topic. I didn’t realize that a new I phone is coming out, and that I would be causing confusion.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I’d love to wait for the new i phone, but I have to be off my feet for 3 days in a hotel room next week, and I’ll need a diversion. I don’t have a laptop, so this seems to be a good solution. Geezer, your list sounds great.

I just read that you can download kindle books onto the I phone, but wonder if the print might be too small for easy reading. Does anyone have that application?

There are thousands of apps. I’ve only downloaded free ones. There are some nice built-in apps also like the Maps function along with ‘street view’.

Pandora radio - This is pretty good - you listen to whatever genre you want. There’s also AOL radio where you can listen to lots of radio stations.

AAA Discounts -shows you all the places around you that offer AAA discounts and what the discounts are

Zillow - If you’re looking for real estate will show you houses for sale around you and the prices and even pictures of the houses. It’ll also show recently sold houses and the price.

Labyrinth - Game just to show how sensitive the thing is to motion (the one with the ball that navigates a surface with holes in it where you control the x and y of the surface)

iWant and AroundMe - Shows restaurants, groceries, gas stations, etc. near you

Fastlane - fun race car game

tv.com - can watch some tv shows

Flashlight - simple but turns your phone all white to light up the area at night if needed

for books, there’s Kindle and ‘Stanza’. I’ve downloaded both but have only used Stanza. You can set the font size and font type so it’s pretty readable.

I have a few paid for apps, but most of mine are also the free ones. Some favorites, not already mentioned:

Shazam - If a song is playing you let the phone (and ap) listen to it, and it will tell you not only the name of the song and the artist, but will show links so that you can buy it directly.

Fluke - Random Ap finder. Fun to play with. Shake or click and it will show you a new ap to look at.

Amazon - goes directly to the site
Woot - also takes you directly to the site
Phoneflix - takes you to the Netflix site
Allrecipes - quick recipe finder

Seafood Watch - tells you which fish and seafood to buy with the most sustainability. I’ve used this one a lot.

Holy Bible - Yes, the bible, right there!

Google - one button ease

Urbanspoon - Another restaurant finder

Zippo - for when you are at a concert and want an encore!

Since my daughter put Word Warp on my phone, I can not get the phone away from my husband! I was playing on the plane yesterday and my husband says, “My turn.”

The only application I have paid for is Bejeweled 2 as I had it on my Palm and love the game.

Wikipanion is great for when you are talking at the dinner table and someone wants to know more information about something. I can not tell you how many times we have been out with family or friends and someone will ask me to check something out.

The Weather Channel
NYTimes
USA Today-I find it is easy to get sport scored quickly.

I have many of the others listed above also.

I am very much looking forward to getting an iPhone. Thanks for all the aps suggestions – I was killing time at an Apple store recently and started browsing through all the aps and was just overwhelmed.

The new iPhone will be announced sometime during the big Apple event that starts June 8. But the actually phones won’t be available right away. Some rumors are that they won’t be released until the end of summer, which would drive me nuts.

Another rumor – that the summer offer this year (buy a Mac laptop with education discount, get free iPod) will include the iPhone – probably the old one, but still a good deal.

My college freshman S is really enjoying his iPhone. His campus doesn’t support any cell phone companies very well except for AT&T. He says none of his friends like to talk on the phone, so all his calls are to and from family. He doesn’t text much (~100 per month), but he does use it often to listen to music. And the web browsing is so simple and readable on that phone.

Beware, though, that the glass front is quite breakable, and many people use a protective case. Quite a few of my S’s friends are using iPhones with cracked glass touchscreens. My H has seen some broken glass on iPhones where he works, too. Here is a link to our story. [thread=691200]Has anyone cracked the glass on their iPhone? The awful facts about iPhone breakage[/thread]

Also, in case you didn’t know, Stanford has a free class on how to make iPhone apps. [A million downloads: Free Stanford course on creating iPhone apps takes off at a furious pace](<a href=“You’ve requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News”>You’ve requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News)

After playing with my S’s iPhone, my H and I would love to have one too, but we can’t justify the extra $60/month total that it would cost for both of us. Especially, since we don’t even have the desire to do email or go online when not at home. H has computers at work, and no cell use is allowed for me while substitute teaching.

^^ I read an article about how AT&T might offer a reduced iPhone rate plan - it might have some data limitations but might be good for a lot of people.

My son also broke his glass screen on his iphone. He bailed and upgraded to Blackberry Bold, which you can easily insure.

I like the feX application which integrates your facebook friends with your contact list. When someone calls me, their facebook picture shows up on my screen.

encountered a strange error message this weekend and could not shut down or power off my iphone. i restored it several times, even using an earlier restore one of those times. no luck at all.

i called 800 my iphone and will be receiving a new phone tomorrow. i had purchased a two year extended service plan of some sort when i bought my phone. they will place a “hold” on a credit card until i return my old phone, but i should be good to go by tomorrow.

everyone in my immediate family has an iphone–we have been really happy and this is the first problem in 2 years and 4 phones that anyone has had. glad that it was resolved so easily, too!

The difference is that you can’t insure iphone through AT&T- it is a special program through Apple and excludes a lot of things. Blackberry, on the other hand, can be insured against any loss or damage. Don’t get me wrong- I love my iphone, but there are some issues.

Have had an iPhone for a few months and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
My teenagers don’t know it, but for their 17th birthday they are each getting the new iPhone that is due out this summer. They’re jealous of mine!

I love the apps and have 8 screens worth.
I have text, phone, mail and safari / internet on my dock (the 4 at the bottom) and moved the iPod elsewhere as I didn’t need it on my dock.

I’ve not had any problems (knock on wood) but I strongly urge you get one of those protectors so it’s not slippery. My reception (3G) is great, but when it’s at home I run it off my home Wifi network. My biggest gripe is the lack of battery life.

It has changed how I communicate and use my free time.

FSU’s College of Medicine may issue the iPhone to their med students due to interest in some of the available apps. Pretty innovative.

One of the problems with the iphone was that if you broke your iphone and could not retrieve the information contained on the phone, things such as your calendar would be lost. Now the iphone and itouch can be synced with Google calendar automatically. If you update your Google calendar using a computer accessing the internet, that information will appear on your iphone calendar. If you enter information into your calendar on your iphone, that information will appear on our Google calendar when you access it from a computer. In other words, you no longer have to purchase backup software/service from Apple (I think it is $99 per year) to ensure you don’t lose your iphone calendar entries.

Wow… Great info. Thank you…

razorsharp, the one thing I don’t have on my iphone (!!) is my calendar, since my work email system has a built in calendar that is incompatible. Is Google calendar free, do I need an app for it, or can it synch with the Calendar function on the iphone?

Karen - I have purchased 2 books through the Kindle app and have been pleased. It’s like having a Barnes & Noble in your home. I read a review of a book that interested me, and poof, within just a few clicks on the Amazon app, I had the book on my phone. It was pretty amazing.

I strongly recommend downloading AppMiners and playing around with that. The AppStore itself only gives you the top 25 apps in each category, and that list doesn’t change very much … AppMiners lets you go “deep” into the store and find new stuff.

And you can browse / post on CC from your phone too :-). It’s perfect for a hotel room.

Pizzagirl: SO impressed with your organization! I was trying to do something similar just the other day. I don’t have nearly as many apps as you do, but you have given me some great ideas!

My wish for the iPhone is that you could have a border around each app that you could classify into a category (yellow for travel, blue for reference, green for media, etc.) and that you could label each screen the way I did above. I like apps that relate to be next to one another and I like having each screen be a different topic area.
I actually wound up putting all my apps into a spreadsheet and moving it around so I came up with the labels and pages that you see above.

It’s ok to break up the home page apps … for example, to my way of thinking, Maps fits better with other travel apps, iPod/iTunes/YouTube fits with media and Stocks fits with money.

The other trick in moving apps is … Take the 4 in your dock and move them to the very last page. Then use the dock as the way to “carry” apps from one page to the next, and then when you’re all done, just go to the last page and retrieve your 4 dock apps. It’s not easily apparent (at least it wasn’t to me) that the dock apps are just as movable as any other app.

You should be able to sync your iphone calendar with the Google calendar if you follow this link:
[Google Mobile | Sync for your iPhone](<a href=“Browse All of Google's Products & Services - Google”>Browse All of Google's Products & Services - Google)

Notice the warning on the page, however. It says:

For people with blackberrys and other phones they can set up a sync by reading this:
[Google Mobile - Sync](<a href=“Browse All of Google's Products & Services - Google”>Browse All of Google's Products & Services - Google)

I can reach my Google calendar using an iphone, an iTouch with internet access, and from any computer with access to the internet. My life is so much easier.

Pizzagirl, et al
For those who do NOT want to have all their current Iphone contacts erased, there is an outside application that will sync the Iphone with Google calender only , and does NOT interfere with or erase contacts. It’s Nuevasync.com
https://www.nuevasync.com/</a>
and it is a breeze to set up. It was because of Nuevasyncs popularity that Google finally got it’s act together and came up with it’s own program to allow syncing between Google calender and the IPhone.
