new Illinois insurance rules for <27 year olds

Just in case you missed it in the news, and this is (ahem) thanks to our current “governor” which is a bit embarrassing, if you are lucky enough to have health insurance, the insurers now have to cover dependents up to age 26 even if they aren’t in school. Up to age 30 if they are veterans. Effective January 1 2009. You have 3 months to add them on to your plan.

This is true in CT now too. Health insurance must be provided to dependents until age 26. If the dependent is a student, they can reside anywhere. If they are NOT a student, they MUST reside in CT (I was a bit disturbed by that one…my kid will probably still be a dependent, but will be residing in a different state). Still…this is a great improvement as all health insurance providers are required to provide this coverage.

Live in IL. H’s 30,000+ company already provides this, and has for a couple of years. Thank God for it in this economy when so many newly college grads are finding a hard time getting a job.
