NEW in 2016 Family Board Games

My brother’s kids and his family are board game nuts. From simple games to VERY complicated they have an arsenal of games to choose from!

So of course I’d like to add to their collection. Looking for recommendations of not-too-complex board games that are NEW in 2016ish. (they are less likely to already have it if it’s new). If it’s an older game that’s been around, I’m not interested.

The two kids in the family are 15 and 12 but extremely bright. So skill is not an issue but anything tacky/sexual/adult themes not probably on my list to purchase.

If they like Dominion the expansion packs are a lot of fun. I’ve played Adventures which came out last year, and I believe my younger son has asked for Empires which came out this year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_(card_game) It’s probably my favorite of all the games my kids play.

My son got Hero Realms through the Kickstarter campaign in the fall. It’s a bit like Magic. More luck and faster moving than Dominion was my impression, but I’ve only played once. http://white-wizard-games.myshopify.com/

I have not played this game, but I am loving the ridiculous concept - Castles of Mad King Ludwig. https://www.amazon.com/Castles-of-Mad-King-Ludwig/dp/B00NP7E05G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481649402&sr=8-1&keywords=castle+mad+king+ludwig It’s on a best games of 2016 list at the Popular Mechanics website.

Ohhh Mr R’s family is obsessed with board games and he has already ordered new ones for his bros for Xmas. I’ll ask him tonight for any recommendations

Isle of Skye, very good game, easy to learn and play.

A little bit older than 2016 Qwixx and Splendor.

Good luck!

@abasket perfect timing. Yay! I just pulled up last years thread to find some games to buy.

Looking forward to people’s finds. We have been playing 7 Wonders. A bit hard to learn but fast playing once you get it.

Someone recently recommended Codenames to me.

Codenames is a fun game^^^. Not expensive either. Not complicated. Recommend.

I actually just looked up Codenames. It’s looking like a winner!

Last Will is a newish game (2014) the Fang family recently started playing. We like it. It’s a moderately complex game, a little bit more complex than Settlers.

Your rich uncle has died, and wants to make sure that the person who inherits his vast fortune can enjoy it properly. To prove your worth, you and your relatives get a small stake to fritter away. The one who squanders their money the fastest will get the entire fortune.

Should you buy a vast estate and spend a fortune to maintain it? Downton Abbey doesn’t come cheap, you know, and you can compound the waste by hiring servants and agents to cheat you. Perhaps glittering dinner parties and lavish cruises are more your style-- don’t forget to rack up even more expenses by hiring an expensive chef, and bringing along that pricey courtesan and her pedigreed dog. Anatole is sure to cook with truffles and lark’s tongues, and after all, Colette needs her silks and satins.

Your money will melt away, and your debts grow. Soon your happy day of declaring bankrupcty will arrive-- unless someone else beats you to insolvency.

Seven Wonders is a game our kids and their cousins enjoy – compete with expansion packs but it is several years old.

I know you asked for new games, but my college girl hinted at the Othello board game. She played it at a coffee shop and loved it. My h and I played as kids, I think my in laws still have my husbands game. We never played with our girls, and its not in our family game cupboard. I ordered from Target online.

We will be playing a new one called “Bring Your Own Book” this holiday season. Can’t tell you how it is yet, though.

I ordered Codenames - I think it will be perfect ! Thanks for the suggestions - hopefully they will help someone else out!

Just ordered two–thanks!

I have no idea if it’s an old game or a new one but our family has fun with Mexican Train.

My daughter has played and enjoyed this Beasty Bar Board Game

Just ordered Codenames and Mexican Train, thanks!

Sorry I am late to this thread buy Codenames is a winner.

My ex was really into board games and taught my kids one that he kept after college called Cosmic Wimpout. It’s a fun dice game with a cloth board and is available once again with several different boards, which are actually all cloth. They got him a new one a couple of years back, but they live where he doesn’t and are always wishing they had a copy, so I got them one this Christmas. It’s simple but lots of fun, and you can even make up your own rules. It’s found at cosmicwimpout.biz.
