$100k cost of attendance, according to Cost of Attendance | MSOM

This cost of attendance is not unusual for private medical schools these days. It just isn’t out of the norm.

Is it one of the most expensive ones?

@momsearcheng

Tuition is pretty typical for private med school at $55K/year. The other $40K is for living expenses, books, exam fees, transportation (car use, maintenance & insurance), health insurance, etc , which you will have no matter where you go to school.

LECOM, which is the least expensive DO schools, has tuition that ranges from $40K/year (MS1 &2) to $45K/year (MS3) so COA is still in the $80K/year range.

Med school is expensive unless you live in the very small number of states (TX, NM, NV, CA, AL, FL, OK) that have low instate public med school tuition .(As low as $15K/year at UNM)

CA in-state public medical school tuition is not that cheap – probably in the typical range for in-state public medical schools. The lowest tuition in-state public medical schools appear to be those in NM and TX, plus ECU in NC.

I think cost of leaving in some places is exaggerated. Students can share apartments.

The federal government only allows students to receive loans up to the school’s estimated COA so schools tend to be generous in estimating cost of living since everyone’s situation is different. Some students may need to live alone, may have families so they need bigger living quarters, may need to live close to campus (which tends to be more expensive), may want certain amenities at the apartment building–like a laundry or workout room, etc.

A student who lives on less than the estimate COA can take out less in loans, but I can tell you that merely having a roommate won’t reduce a student’s living expenses by a huge amount.
