New Pension Question

I am eligible for my pension January 1, but wonder if there is an advantage to waiting until after filing my daughters last CSS profile. She graduates June 2013.

If she graduates June 2013 then the last Profile would have been LAST January (Jan 2012 for the 2012-2013 school year).

Agree with Erin’s mom. If your daughter is a senior now, you would not be completing another Profile.

When you say you are “eligible” for your pension…are you saying that this will be income in 2013? If so, income for 2013 would not be on a Profile for the upcoming year anyway. If, however, this is a lumps sum payout that would then be sitting in your bank account, then file (if you need to) the Profile before you take the money. The Profile is online NOW for the next school year.

Does she graduate high school in June 2013 or college?

Well…I was guessing college because the OP wondered if she should do something before she filed her LAST Profile.

the question only makes sense if the D is currently in high school and is graduating in June 2013. makes no sense if the D is graduating from college in June.

Is the mom asking if she should wait to begin collecting her pension until she files her last CSS Profile - which would be in a few years???

It depends. Pension & work income both are incomes

If the OP is currently working…then collecting pension instead probably won’t make a difference. HOWEVER, it is possible that this OP is not working and would collect a pension he/she is eligible to collect in 2013 January.

However, if he/she is worried about this as INCOME, it won’t matter for this years filing of the Profile at all…it is based on 2012 income. If he/she is getting a lump sum payout, that would be considered an asset…and would best be taken after the date of the profile filing…which can be done at any time…it’s available now.

If the OP’s kiddo is graduating from High School in June 2013…waiting FOUR years to collect pension seems like a long time to me!
