One of my son’s first conductors is involved with a new (to the West Coast) program for composition students between 13-18 and asked me to spread the word. It now takes place both on West Coast and the East Coast. This is the abbreviated press release:

The 8th annual National Young Composers Workshop, will be held for the first time in Marin County, California. This workshop is free for students between the ages of 13 to 18 who would like to learn how to write music for orchestra instruments or full orchestra. It will be held this Fall at San Domenico School in San Anselmo. Nationally-recognized composers from around the US will teach the sessions, and musicians from Marin Symphony will provide demonstrations of each instrument.

This workshop is a unique opportunity for any young musician who has an interest in learning how to compose orchestra or ensemble music. It is not necessary to have prior experience in musical composition to attend the workshop.

Young musicians who attend the workshop can enter compositions in the National Young Composers Challenge. Six compositions will be selected for performance in Spring of 2013 by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and six additional compositions will be performed in Fall of 2013 by the Marin Symphony. Although it is recommend, it is not necessary to attend the workshop in order to submit a composition in the challenge.
