Uncharacteristically “spur of the moment” for me. My older saint bernard passed away this summer; despite my younger dog’s loneliness and my husband’s desire for another i really wasn’t ready. But i went out and got a “surprise” christmas puppy and he is so fantastic!

St. Bernard pup…9 weeks, 23 pounds of endearing! My 5 y.o. St. is being great, although a little disappointed he’s not big enough for tug of war yet. Made my Christmas, when i plopped him into hu by’s lap and said “Merry Christmas! Early!”

We have a new puppy too!! A very sudden unexpected arrival–thought we would have to wait for a Spring litter. Ours is a 4 month old Lakeland Terrier-all of 7 lbs. We also lost our older dog last August. The new puppy has really brightened this holiday season.

How exciting ! We got our not puppy ( she was 18 months old ) around Christmas , three years ago. She was not a rescue , but she was the best decision after having also lost a pet unexpectedly.
I am sure you will have a LOT of fun with him/her
What is the name ?

My S2 informed me last night that he is bringing home the ‘house dog’ that he & his off-campus housemates ‘adopted’ in August. The girl who actually owns the dog (whose roommate is allergic, hence the guys taking care of the dog) is refusing to take the dog home with her for winter break. Her mother moved into a “no pets allowed” apartment. The 3 other guys in the house have already gone home for break, leaving S2 with the dog. Failure to plan ahead has left him stuck with a 2-yr-old dog over break. I’m not sure how my 14-yr-old geriatric dog will handle another dog - she’s used to being the Only Dog in the house - but I guess we’ll find out tonight. I love dogs but I’m not happy about having a 2nd dog unexpectedly “dropped” on me without warning.

I suspect that will be the case at our house. Poor geriatric dog is very arthritic after 2 ACL surgeries & she was never very good with other dogs to begin with, but perhaps a younger dog will help her discover the fountain of youth.

Good luck 12rmh! Your son is being responsible (and including you!). Hope all goes well with the older dog. I think kindness to animals is a very telling positive trait.
Balletmom - enjoy the puppy. What joy!
