New SAT scores vs PSAT scores?

215, 2090 (first try)…I think the scores are supposed to be middling, but I saw a long thread on CC before where it was determined that the average CCer at least, gained 70 points from PSAT to SAT. This might be because people took the SAT 3 times though.

yes, most likely this is the “long thread” you are referring to…average improvement from PSAT to SAT from 151 self-reporters was about 90 SAT points. Generally, however, more points were gained with a lower starting PSAT score. The report is on this page:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=52299&page=12&pp=20

I believe the vast majority of SAT scores reported were for a single SAT sitting, and if provided multiple SAT sitting scores, I only chose the one closest timing-wise to the PSAT sitting. I discussed this in the report.

Keep in mind that averages are just that…averages. There were plenty of “deprovers” in the data set, but the improvers outweighed those losses.

btw drummerdude, you may be interested in a smaller survey of 1st-time SAT results compared to 2nd-time SAT results:

Check out that R-squared value. This goes to show that peformance on the PSATs is in no way correlated with performance on the SATs…at least among CC-ers…

What is considered a good score for the PSATs? I don’t get the huge difference in these scores.

Interesting R-squared is only like 0.48. Not a very good PSAT-SAT performance. =] good for me haha. hopefully meanin’g a rise

@em36…it depends on what you define as a good score…if a good score to you means semifinalist chances…youll prob need 215+ (~99 percentile) in most states to be safe…but if you just want a good score that shows you are intelligent…anything 200+ (~95 percentile…roughly…dont know for sure) should be good

To be commended, you need at least a 203. If you want to be a National Merit Semifinalist, you may need a score of 222 or higher. Some states have lower qualifying scores. Any score around 200 is considered “good” and fairly high.
