New SAT scores vs PSAT scores?

2180 v. 180 PSAT means nothing!

Note: I did, in fact, take the PSAT very seriously. I just got a very poor result :(

NJ–good question…I was thinking of running a few more stats like standard dev & perhaps R-squared for correlation…I’ll try a few & if they look marginally credible, I’ll post. Don’t want to loose the message in too many stats. I was also thinking about segmenting the data to show variances for certain starting PSAT value ranges, this to give the test taker within a certain PSAT range an idea of potential SAT movement. I’d also like to re-graph as the visual correlation is pretty easy to see, but that’s an arduous task, & I haven’t found any simple graphics pacakages that can do ASCII graphing for me so the graph will work on this forum.

Any other ideas NJ?

I’d still like to get 5 more data sets to make an even 100 before I start crunching.

Just run a one number summary on the difference in the scores, and the bigger the standard deviation the less correlation really. Theres no real correlation to test persay…unless you plotted SAT score vs. PSAT score, to test if a high PSAT score correlates to a high SAT score, which I’m pretty sure it would. That’s all I’ve got really.

thanks NJ

via PM, here’s another data set:

1st PSAT: 189
2nd PSAT: 209
1st SAT: 2070
2nd SAT: 2260

This data set highlights a problem with this analysis, namely what are we comparing? As I intended & I suspect most reported their junior year PSAT (2nd PSAT above) and their March SAT (1st SAT above), I will use the 209/2070 data set. As a second round of New SAT results was not reportable when most of these data were collected, I think we can largely rule out too much bias from a 2nd try New SAT, but I have no way of knowing if someone reported their junior SAT or one prior to their junior year. Generally, since the PSAT scores generally rise with age, a positive bias would be created for the overall analysis of the data contained in this thread if many reported their pre-junior PSAT rather than their junior PSAT.

haha

i think a 2100 vs. 160

2060 vs 211

2220 vs 223

1950 vs 184

geez. you guys are smart.

1940 vs 205

I didn’t take SAT very seriously, but I’m still shocked at how poorly I did. I got perfect math scores on the PSAT and ACT, but SAT I got only 700. I was really shocked, when I finished the SAT math I was sure about everything but one question.

I don’t think I can retake the SAT at this point (need to do SAT II’s in Sept). I thought I cancelled the sending of my SAT scores to my schools right after the test, but apparently they were still sent.

I’m projecting this ACT will be 32-34, I’ll have to wait and see.

218 v 2350

Dsmo - what are you gonna do then? You have below par SAT scores…and you can’t retake?

perhaps what would be more interesting would be to see the correlation betwen the individual sections because its hard to equate the writing psat with the writing sat due to the presence of an essay on the latter.

Papa Chicken, why don’t you do a T test for statistical significance? a simple correlation or LSRL with r^2 does not always say much (correlation does not necessarily constitute causation). statistical significance tests are much more useful. The T test (would you do it of independent means?) should work nicely with a decent sample size here.

Likewise, a good idea eeepiyk. I will be consulting with some co-workers who are more stats-savvy than I to look into any other, more sophisticated analyses, but simple correlation & T-test are within my realm of capability!

Based upon the fact that a new round of SAT 1’s is due to be reported starting 6/20, I will hold off on summarizing & analyzing until students have had time to report their PSAT/SAT scores on this thread.

195 vs. 1920 (march)

199 psat, 2170 sat (march), 2220 sat (may)

2210 (March)/2220 (May)

2380 v. 218 o.o

gandert-- I am going to transfer your SAT/SAT data set over to the SAT/SAT thread.

i had a 194 and a 2200
haha psat owned me
