Hi Everyone,
I’ll be transferring to Emory this Spring from Maryland. I previously attended another college in Georgia, but it wasn’t for me, so I am really excited to attend Emory! I think it will be a great fit.

I’m in the process of filling out my housing application and I was wondering about the following…

1) Residence Halls! Any suggestions for a nice residence hall for one semester? I will be sophomore status for Spring (50 credits completed already), but will be a Junior when Spring is over. I definitely want a sense of community in my res hall. It would be great to have a dorm that is social and respectful. I have heard all kinds of things about the res halls, good and bad. I will be moving in this January and moving out in May. A single room is preferable, but I am willing to live with someone if they are a nice/clean/respectful person. I lived with a roommate at my last college and she was great. I’d love to have that same experience at Emory. I realize that you can’t necessarily ‘hand-pick’ your residence hall as a new transfer student, but I’d plan to call ResLife and see if I can communicate my preferences with someone or at least find out about room availability in certain halls.

2) Meal plans… any ideas? I am trying to decide between Plan B (95 DUC entries/$650 Dooley Dollars) and Plan C (125 DUC entries/$400 Dooley Dollars). I try to be as healthy as possible (even when options are limited, like in a dining hall situation) and I rarely eat fast food, so I wouldn’t be frequenting the Chick Fil A or other fast-food establishments on campus. For these reasons, I am kind of leaning towards Plan C with the larger number of DUC entries. I was wondering, can you only use your Dooley Dollars for fast food or packaged food? Do you typically end up with leftover DD’s at the end of the semester? I want to pick the plan that makes the most sense for my lifestyle and is the most cost efficient.

3) Any other advice you might want to offer a new transfer student! I love meeting new people, throwing my door open and having people visit. I’m an avid photographer and writer. I love hiking and doing community service. I will probably not go greek just because I’m almost a Junior and that’s a little late to join. I’m hoping to pursue a major in GBS along with either the Co-Journalism major OR the Global Health minor.

Thanks to anyone who can weigh in. Any other advice would be appreciated. Other transfer students–feel free to chime in and introduce yourselves. I am really looking forward to Emory!

Best,
Natalie :)
