New Star Wars Movie WITH SPOILERS

When did Mark Hamill turn into Anthony Hopkins?

I think we’ll eventually learn that the family Rey was waiting for on Jakku is not her real family.

We saw it last night. I so wanted to love it, but for me the whole thing with Leia and Han was so out of character, forced and sad. The flyboys get their zooming plane sounds, the robot people got R2 and a new friend, cantina nostalgists got a new but familiar bar ---- and I get estranged and awkward Leia/Han? with some pretty poor dialogue? It would have been another choice to keep the “son is a problem” motif (I also hated how Kylo’s parentage was revealed so casually, “hey, Han’s his dad”) but have his parents be in it together.

Anyway, they could have been happy together, worried about their son, and I would have joyfully watched their happy reunion on the screen. Baaaa, humbug. No pair of actors are good enough to disguise Carrie and Harrison’s actual fondness for each other. The whole thing just irritates me – will we have to live through Leia being angsty about Han leaving on less than cordial terms? And aren’t old married people allowed to kiss each other goodbye? I so wanted Han to say “I love you” and Leia could have said “I know”

Knew he was dead when we saw the metal bridge.

I suppose Han Solo’s dead. We saw him stabbed through the body with a light saber, and then fall from a great height, disappearing into the mist below. How dead is that? It’s not comic book dead, but it might be movie dead.

Four things out of my expectation (and I only watched 2 SW episodes earlier):

The movie is too short. Isn’t this the last Star Wars movie or we have to wait for several years for a new episode in the coming years?
I thought I would see a damaged or deformed face when Ren removed his mask. His young face is not that evil.
I thought Luke would join the Force and do something more spectacular in the end.
Not enough spectacular spaceships and graphic effect. Maybe I should watch the 3D version.

Why would this be the last movie? They always come in threes…

The next movie is already filming, or at least is in preproduction.

One note: we saw it in 3D, and the glasses were really terrible–too small, different from others I’ve used before. I don’t know if this was because of the particular theater or what. I think it actually would have been better (for me) in 2D, at least if the screen was big.

The 3D was distracting, I never prefer it over 2D. Plus at my theater, a 3D ticket came out to $20. Grumble grumble.

Anyway, my theory is that Rey is a descendant (daughter?) of Obi-Wan Kenobi. In that flashback montage that happened when she touched Luke’s lightsaber, the voice that called out “Rey…” was Obi-Wan’s (director JJ Abrams confirmed this). Too many people have been revealed as members of the Skywalker family at this point (Darth Vader is related! Leia, too! And now Kylo Ren!) I think it’d be overkill to also have Rey be a part of it. BUT it would explain, if Han recognized her, why he immediately offered her a job traveling with him.

My theater laughed when Kylo removed his mask. I associate Adam Driver with Lena Dunham’s annoying boyfriend on Girls, which took me out of the moment. Someone made a pretty funny Twitter account for “Emo Kylo Ren” https://twitter.com/KyloR3n :

I thought there were a bunch of hints that Rey was Han’s daughter. But they might be intended to mislead us.

I loved all the throw back natural landscapes that called the original trilogy to mind. S and I also LOVED that they included a bottomless pit. No space ship, cloud planet or throne room would be complete without a bottomless pit!

Okay, I thought it was hilarious that Han greets Leia with “you changed your hair.”

^^^ That’s a line from Out of Africa!

I could enjoy more exchanges between Hans and Leia. I’m sorry he died. Is mark ha ill up to the challenge to be a Jedi teacher?

Didn’t DV kill Obi-wan in a lightsaber duel in the original movie?

Oops yeah, I wasn’t thinking on a sensical timeline. Granddaughter or other descendant, not daughter. It seems somewhat clear that she was one of the young students trained by Luke originally, but I think it makes more sense for her to be a Kenobi than a Skywalker.

We went last night and overall I enjoyed the movie and laughed a lot. DS and I had rewatched “a New Hope” a couple of days earlier so most of the connections were immediately recognizable. I found the whole issue of Han, Leia, and Luke all having issues over Ben’s actions very sad - hopefully the first couple of decades after Star Wars VI were pleasant; maybe just the last few years unhappy?

Re Rey - I figured she was Luke’s daughter because I though his theme music played a couple of times in relation to her. Someone dropped her of on the desert planet to hide and protect her and someone taught her those mad fighting skills. My newest preposterous theory is that she was cloned from Luke’s lost hand aka Dr. Who regeneration (ot, very much looking forward to his Christmas special tonight).

Darth Gollum/Voldemort?

Shouldn’t Leia have been hugging Chewie, who just lost his friend and partner of many years, rather than the new girl who just met everyone? (Or am I missing a huge foreshadowing moment?)

And Harrison Ford…best Christmas present ever!

Yeah, I also wondered why Leia would hug a complete stranger.

Yes, she tends to be reserved. Can’t figure out why Chewie didn’t merit a hug too.

Leia’s uncharacteristic hugginess w Rey could be a clue. It could be the Force drawing her to her secret incestuous child w Luke.

I liked Chewie’s rage fight after Han’s death. And the flirty scene with the medical woman. We need more Chewie! Someone put together a Chewie montage with him singing “Silent Night”, it’s great! (but there’s no visuals)
