My freshman will be attending Chapman in S. California, living on campus, with a meal plan, no car.
Can anyone offer me any idea on how much spending money is appropriate ? We expect to take care of start up costs (books, dorm supplies, etc), but expect our student to manage their finances beyond that.

There are a number of general “spending money” threads. You might want to re-title your thread…since spending money is what you’re asking about. Something like “Spending Money for Chapman U freshman.”

I think that a regular poster (and maybe a moderator), Paying3tuitions, had a kid @ Chapman. Perhaps she will see your post and respond.

My son is a Chapman student. During his freshman year, he also was in the dorm and on the meal plan. He did have a car to buy gas for, though. He was receiving a $300/month stipend and it was plenty of money. In fact, he said he had more spending money than most of his friends. I think $50/week would be plenty enough for laundry, eating a few meals out, giving a friend gas money for driving, etc. Speaking of which, please tell him that if a friend is driving him around, he should always contribute some gas money.
