new theory on number of acceptances

ok so we have all been wondering what percentage acceptances have been notified yet, and i have some interesting information. the USC class of 2011 facebook group gave me an idea.

USC Class of 2011 group: 320 members

Cornell Class of 2011 group: 583 members

there are several factors to consider:
-USC and Cornell have the same acceptance rate according to collegeboard
-assuming both school accept facebook users at the same rate, usc should have about the same percentage of people joining their school’s group
-USC has a larger student body, therefore it will accept more students with the same acceptance rate as Cornell

this leads me to believe that USC still has many more acceptances to send out

there is one potential caveat in my plan:
Cornell does early decision so students accepted ED will be more likely to join the group than USC students who have been accepted but do not know if they will be going.

haha i know this is entirely unscientific, but it’s something to think about.

DON’T STRESS GUYS!

Wow- pretty random but I’m impressed with the thought.

Sounds sensible … and although not scientific …

it should help a lot of people feel better about the wait .

there’s still A LOT of acceptances left to go out .

great !

haha cc411 i think i met your son through that facebook group

I believe it’s true… however, you must take into consideration that there’s many kids who got into USC and didn’t join the Facebook group…

I know 8 people personally from my school who didn’t join, and 3 of them don’t even have faceboook accounts. Majority of the kids don’t want to commit themselves to a certain college until they make their decisions after April 1st.

bluebeard, note that Cornell’s group specfically states that only people who are definitely attending in the fall can join (thus I am not a member of that group… as of now) Whereas for USC, it specifically says it’s for those who have been accepted, and therefore more people are able to join.

also, ED/EA rates are drastically higher than regular acceptance rates.

i don’t know if this is relevant, but when I got accepted, I got the Welcome to USC booklet and it says

“Congratulations! You are part of a very select group - the 2650 diverse, talented and highly motivated individuals who will become the USC class of 2011.”

doesn’t that mean that they are gonna accept around 2650? =</p>

oh yea it also says there were 34000 applicants who applied on the same page =D

nah, about 2650 will matriculate

oh i see, my bad lol

Inside the USC acceptance booklet:
“Congratulations! You are part of a very select group- the 2,650 diverse, talented and highly motivated individuals who will become the USc class of 2011. You stood out among more than 34,000 other applicants…”

I guess 2650 will matriculate.

Yes, just those who will matriculate. They actually offer admission to a little over 8000 applicants.

bluebeard- he just told me that also. You blew my cover :)

This is random, but is that guy in the “You can see your decision online” thread telling the truth about his rejection? I’ve tried to log into that website several times, but i’ve never gotten through. Will they really send you a rejection letter for trying to log on too many times? I haven’t gotten a letter either way yet, so this makes me really nervous!

^■■■■■^

hahahahahah

falls outta chair and holds onto belly

yes. didn’t you hear? usc mailed him a flaming bag of dog poop.

they also lazered him with the millenium falcon. cuz you know, george lucas let them borrow it.

hahahahaha

my theory, or guess actually is that about 75% of acceptances arent sent out until April 1 or whatever it is…

Btw are they MAILED by April 1 or are they RECIEVED by then?

i believe that they are mailed by april 1st pmcharkins

As I’ve posted in other threads, when I took a friend’s daughter to interview in Feb. the professor told her the vast majority of USC’s acceptance letters go out around April 1st – I don’t recall the exact stat but I think it was around 80%. The Jan through early March acceptances are a pretty small group of the very top-ranked students. So nobody needs to panic for quite a while yet. :)

pmcharkins thinks 70% of the letters are already sent out

PBK Mom thinks 20% of the letters are sent out…

I’m confused :)
