<p>This one is also a pretty statement piece! Depends on how fancy you want to get and how much money you want to spend! And if you’ll have other occasions to wear some of these choices! If you do go with a sleeveless option, this time of year they have a gazillion wraps, sheer jackets or tons of other choices to choose from for a small cover up of some sort…</p>

<p>I think that the “don’t wear black” rue applies to afternoon and morning weddings, not glamour evening weddings at a ritzy venue. </p>
<p>That said, I disagree with the suggestion of pants. Septuagenarians can pull that off; younger women should wear floor-length dresses. This is not just a black tie event; this is a NYE wedding in the city. At the very least, wear a cocktail dress with enough sparkle to double as the Times Square ball.</p>
<p>Also look into Rent The Runway: they have amazing dresses and you do not have to worry about being seen in the same dress twice.</p>
<p>My friend was invited to attend the wedding of the woman who started Rent The Runway and all the guests were required to wear her dresses, not only to the wedding but the rehearsal dinner. My friend wears a brace on her leg (she had a stroke a few years ago) and must wear something long, but no long dresses were allowed. She finally found a few which covered up most of her brace. They were delivered a few days before the wedding and one of them had stains all over it. She decided to **** it and wear something in her closet because there was no way she was going to wear a stained dress. Then the day before the wedding was called off. </p>
<p>She told me she thought the bride’s plan was to use the guests in some big marketing campaign (why else make them all wear dresses from RTR?) So tacky.</p>
<p>Like others, I think black is perfectly fine for many weddings given the season and time of day. I tend to look better in navy so I have worn navy to several weddings and formal events and fit in just fine.</p>

<p>Thank you all for your suggestions. I have three dresses ordered from Nordstrom’s and may order more today - love the free shipping and returns. I really want to like the lacey ones but need to get used to the look. I also need to attend a Holiday Party at a country club with these same people so if I could find two…</p>
<p>I am not a big fan of the lace overlays. Many of them look frumpy to me. I guess I am just out of step. :)</p>
<p>If you are going to rent a tux 2 or more times, it almost pays to buy one to have and just upgrade as you need to. It’s easier than going to rent one every now and then.</p>
<p>Consolation, lace can is tricky. I think it was missypie who used the term “lace sack” in the DY thread to describe lacy styles that do not flatter anyone - very appropriate term. :)</p>
<p>One thought, tired already – is this going to be like a long cocktail party or is it more of a dinner with dancing? Make sure your feet are happy (I see new shoes in your future!)</p>
<p>Well, the lace shift dresses from Nordstroms were awful. They were Adrianna Papell and looked great on the model but frumpy and awful on me. There was a third dress - Ivy and Blue, plain black with some beading on the shoulders that is also going back. I hate to keep ordering and returning but that’s what I’m going to do. I’m just afraid that once Thanksgiving hits, things will be sold out.</p>
<p>What I need is a day, with nothing else to do, that I can shop, ALONE. Oh yea, I would also need to live within about 5 miles of a few malls that are stocked with holiday dresses.</p>
<p>Tired already, don’t give up, keep shopping! IMO, lace is very tricky - it can either look gorgeous or resemble grandma’s kitchen curtains draped over one’s body, and there is usually no middle ground. Even a supermodel can look frumpy in lacy dresses. :)</p>
<p>Take a look at Saks sale site - Theia, David Meister etc. can be bought there for reasonable $$, and returns are also free.</p>
<p>I recently attended a gala at which the honoree wore this dress (or at least I think it was this dress; I didn’t notice the tuck details and I’m trying to decide whether it might have been the version of this dress with sleeves). She looked beautiful; very elegant.</p>

<p>^^I like that dress zipyourlips. It’s flirty, but elegant and appropriate for a wide variety of ages. I have a “summer” LBD, but this one with sleeves could be a staple winter LBD.</p>
