I am looking for a very specific New Year’s Eve event in New York City (I am well aware that nothing like that may be available). I am looking for something in under $100 per person price range (if it’s a little over $100, that’s OK too depending on what it is). Now, most events in that price range that I have found have a DJ and 80’s/disco/hip hop music. I would like to find something with classical music and formal attire (long dresses for women, suits for men). Now, I don’t know if there are events like that in that price range but if you know any, please let me know.

Hurrah for the NY Phil for doing an all-American program! I cannot tell you how much I detest the National Symphony’s knock-off of the Vienna Phil New Year’s concert, with its all Viennese program.

You’d think that the major orchestra in Washington DC could champion American music for New Year’s, but nooooo! It has to follow Vienna instead of coming up with its own traditions. I HATE that!

Are you under 21? Are you looking for somewhere to spend a long evening, including midnight? Do you only want to be in the city or are you willing to go just a bit farther out?

A bit more information might help us find just what you are looking for!

I am over 21, but I don’t drink, so open-bar, etc. is not important to me. I live and work in the city, and I would prefer to stay in the city on New Year’s Eve, just because I don’t want to deal with transportation (I can probably walk to my apartment from most places in the city).

By the way, jazz music would be something I am interested in too. I just don’t want a “night club”-like party.

On second thought, if there is a really awesome place outside the city, I would probably go.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far!

You’re a college student - go to Times Square and watch the ball drop! It’s insane and you’ll probably never want to do it again. I am a firm believer that everyone should do it at least once. I’ve done it twice while in college (I’m from the city) with friends and it was fantastic.

Many years later (2001/2) I had the good fortune to be invited to the then new Mayor’s inauguration which he did atop of Times Square. We had a party with food and music and then just before midnight we went outside into a secured area and watched the ball drop and the Mayor be sworn in. I think I prefer the crowds on the street!

I am not a college student (graduated two years ago), and I watched the ball drop at Times Square last year :)
