I have been thinking a lot about what resolutions to make this year. I would like to make ones that are a little more introspective than the usual “lose ten pounds” type that get old pretty quickly by the time February rolls around.

A few years ago I realized that I was embarrassed at having dropped out of a prestigious university 20 years ago, when I was young and stupid – all of my friends and family are college grads, and most have advanced degrees. So I resolved to finish the danged degree, and over the course of a couple of years I took a class or two a semester, and am now done! It wasn’t that I needed the degree for work, since I own a business that has been doing well. I just got tired of feeling like I had failed at something.

So now I’m looking for other things that I wish I had always done, and am resolving to do them. My first resolution is to go back to writing fiction, which I enjoyed when I was in college (the first time) and start working on a novel. Maybe it won’t amount to much, but at least I won’t feel regret at never having done it.

My second resolution is to do a few hours of volunteer work a week. Again, this is something that has fallen by the wayside as I’ve gotten older, and I want to return to it.

Do any of the rest of you CCers have any interesting resolutions for the New Year?
