New York Applicant for Northwestern University

Does being a New York resident help my chances of acceptance to Northwestern since it is a midwest university and pulls a large pool of midwest applicants? I have a 30 ACT, about a 101.4 weighted average, and I am ranked 2nd or 3rd in my class to give you a brief academic background.
Thank you

Not really. Think about how many NY applicants NU gets.
The 30 SAT is mediocre for NU, and you don’t give enough other info for meaningful assessment.
That being said, NU is a spectacular school, and if you’re interested in it, you should apply and take your chances, whatever they may be.

If you are not a minority, you will not get in with a 30 ACT. Being from NY gives you no advantage anywhere- there are a lot of us.

Northwestern’s 09-10 Common Data Set indicates that Geographical residence/state residency are ‘not considered’ in admissions.

However, the Level of an applicant’s interest is ‘considered’ – so if you’re really interested, a visit might help.

The same Common Data Set also indicates that the 25th Percentile for the ACT Composite was 31 (and admissions seem to be getting tougher), so your score would put you below the 25th percentile.

While I wouldn’t be as pessimistic as prior poster, even with your very excellent grades and class rank, NU is probably a reach school. However, if it is a top choice, you should apply – you definitely won’t get in if you don’t.

Improving the ACT by a couple of points (or getting a comparably high SAT score) would help you tremendously.

Answer: No, not at all, unfortunately, but you still have a good shot!

It’s easy to get caught up in these forums and actually start to believe that a 30 ACT is a bad score. It’s not. Never forget that you are OBVIOUSLY a smart kid. I got in last year with a 31 ACT and beat out a girl who was ranked MUCH higher than myself. It has to do with a lot of factors. That being said, dont worry about what state you’re from, worry about your essay, and extracurricular activities. That’s what will get you in.
