they write the nastiest things and then accuse the Patriots of being classless winners. so disappointed in my high school friends and looking at the New York fan base from the outside (since I’m up here now). or is it the nature of the sport, not to just win, but to want your opponent to lose, and even get hurt? I wasn’t raised like that and I’m surprised my old friends turned out like that
It’s the nature of the sport. Requiring all the skull and body armor, it’s intrinsically violent and brings out blood lust. The patrician fans in the Colosseum probably also shouted crass things as they watched the armored gladiators hacking each other to pieces.
Jets fans? There is a deep hate between the teams. You won’t find many Red Sox fans saying nice things about the Yankees either.
I’m in a mix household right now. Half my brothers are for Denver, half for Patriots (well, one was for Green Bay but that’s over). Things are not calm.
That’s an understatement.
When I was living in the Boston area, my commute home took me past Fenway Park. Made for real exciting and what can be scary moments to some in my place.
There were a few times when I saw and experienced Patriot fans acting abusively towards Yankee fans or folks they found/thought were New Yorkers in general like yours truly. In one incident when a Patriot fan tried getting into my face for being a New Yorker, I had to shove him hard out of the trolley car in order to avoid a punch.
And ironically…I’m not a major Yankees or baseball fan, either…
^^^Apparently not a football fan either.
People just love to hate the Pats
Aw, poor Tom Brady. You gotta feel for the guy:(
Yes, Tom has a tough life.
I’m sure there are Pats fans who give as good as they get.
Is this an East Coast and Great Lakes thing? I’ve heard about New York and Boston, but I’ve never really seen this sort of thing between San Francisco and Seattle.
Yes, there you have it…I really have zero interest in football , but I am from NE and my friends and family from there are hard core fans. I see some snark when it comes to certain teams and of course, certain QBs …but I still see a lot more vitriol for the Pats and Tom Brady in particular.
Well, I don’t know about football in the West, but Dodger fans have a habit of breaking the skulls of opposing fans. I’ll take a few harsh words, myself.
Everyone hates a team that wins too much. Year’s ago, the pats were losers, underdogs… No vitrol. Now, it’s the opposite.
My dad was an eagles fan until he died. He didn’t have nice things to say about most any team.
Sorry, I’m not a Pats fan either.
I lived in Philly for 20 years and New England the past 15.
Eagles fans make Patriots’ backers look positively genteel.
Eagles household here – I will say that at least when other people snark, we can just shrug. There’s no snappy comeback for “your team sucks” when , well…it actually does
Philly fans are the ultimate in dedicated, since who else would root for teams that are always struggling to be .50?
Good luck to everyone. Enjoy the game!
We are west coasters, but when our DS2 was little he loved the Pats and Tom Brady-we have no idea why. My husband took him to a Chargers/Pats game and our then 10 year old insisted on wearing his Pats gear. He was verbally abused by full grown men and my husband even felt physically threatened in the bathroom even though he wore Chargers gear. Said son eventually shifted and is now a die-hard Chargers fan.
It is all over, while some fan bases appear to me more civil (St. Louis Cards fans come to mind), it isn’t just NY and such. A couple of years ago fans of the opposing team were severely beaten at a 49’ers game. In the crap bowl that was the Pittsburgh-Cincy game, cincy fans cheered and clapped when Rothlesberger was put on a cart after apparently being serious injured, Raiders fans used to have a chant back in the bad old days when opposing players were taken off the field injured and reveled in it, Philadelphia fans (baseball and football) are known for their belligerance. Yankees Red Sox used to be a lot more vile then it is now, back then it was quite honestly over the top.
NE takes a lot of heat because they are so successful, but it also is because they are perceived as being arrogant, Bellichick for example with his skirting around the rules, and also that he often is a classless winner, like when the Giant s beat them in the superbowl, Belichick literally running off the field so he didn’t have to congratulate Tom Coughlin, and Brady himself is known among other players as a jerk, not to mention the things he says publicly about other teams and such. It is about perceptions, and to be honest I don’t hate NE, I only wish we didn’t have the pathetic buffoons who generally run the Jets, and I have a lot of respect for Brady and Belichick, for a lot of reasons (put it this way, NE wins with players who aren’t necessarily superstars, other teams whine when someone gets hurt and use it as an excuse, NE manages to win often with mediocre players at best). Belichick knows the game, he knows the history and rules better than anyone, and it shows in the way the team plays.
Arrogance isn’t limited to NE, I don’t like Seattle for much the same reason, on both sides of the ball they have some really arrogant jerks, and if I have to hear about how Jesus made Russel Wilson a great QB or about his relationship with his GF, I’ll barf. They have a great team, and Carrol is a good coach, especially on defense, but I prefer teams that show it on the field (while I was amused by Rex Ryan’s antics with the Jets, I also got tired of the bark being worse than the bite…I don’t know about the Jets these days, there is little bark, but the bite isn’t there, either). Then we had Dallas, with the whole “America’s team” crap, this from a team that for a while resembled the team in “the Longest Yard”, the whole being pure and pious and such, give me a break (I will add that Jerry Jones may be a lot of things, but I don’t think he promotes that crap, I think he would hire the Mean Machine team if he thought they would win lol).
lets not forget the cheating element…
@musicprnt, even here in Dallas, there was some dismay at all the punk-like behavior during that era. I remember seeing a cartoon in the local paper that said “Dallas Cowboy Super Bowl Rings:” It was a drawing of handcuffs.
