Newark Airport to Princeton

Alas not a college visit. Layover in Newark necessitates visiting of extended family in Princeton. Will be coming from Newark to Princeton either around 6 p.m. on a Monday, or if that is really a horrendously tragic plan, Tuesday morning. Need to be back at the airport to catch a 6 p.m. flight out on Tuesday evening.
Advice on rental car, routes, timing traffic, Amtrak – grateful for anything.

My advice is, next time don’t tell them you’ll be in town. :D

Jersey transit train is really, really easy, and inexpensive. (my d. does it all the time, and I did it last time I was in the area.)

NJTransit, NorthEastCorridor line, direct to Princeton Junction, dinky to Princeton, or cab from Princeton Junction station to wherever you need to visit in Princeton. Very easy to access NJTransit from EWR on AirTrain…follow the signs. Cheap and easy. Do not do Amtrak, will cost 3X as much. Do not rent car, ditto.
