Newbie cruising to Alaska...any excursion ideas?

We are going on our first cruise in a few weeks-to Alaska…just the hubby and I - what are the best excursions you have been on off the ship? Any tips on cruising at all?

I just asked this question and got some great feedback: <a href=“Alaska Cruise Excursions? - Parent Cafe - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1620715-alaska-cruise-excursions-p1.html</a></p>

dreamer11 - Not sure what ports you are hitting and what your acceptable level of physical exercution is but I can pass on a bit from experience. Skagway has been our favorite port from the cruises we have taken so far, If you are looking for low activity the Whitepass Railway is a nice beautiful ride (think that name is correct). If you are looking for a bit more, we took one excursion where we went out to a mushing camp and met a number of folks who were training for the Ididerod (forgive spelling please) also beautiful and very interesting. Jeauneu is an ineresting city to just walk, we did a whitewater rafting trip one time there but it rained on us all day and I still shiver when I think about it. Never considered that water that coming from a melting glacier would be rather cold, should of, just didnt.

If you want to PM me with a list of ports you are stoppinig at and some of your thoughts I would be happy to reply with what I know about them. Also include your embarkation point, I can also share a bit about Seattle or Victoria too (normal starting or stopping points).

We loved the whale watch trip we took with Orca Enterprises in Juneau; they also took us to Mendenhall Glacier after the watch and then back to the ship. http://www.orcaenterprises.com/</a> Small boat, knowledgeable & friendly crew.

But our very favorite was the kayaking we did with Southeast Kayak in Ketchikan - small groups (we were actually the only 2 in ours), and friendly guides. http://www.kayakketchikan.com/</a> I can’t recommend them highly enough!

Are you familiar with cruisecritics? Here is a link to their Alaska forum - I’m sure there will be helpful info there - have fun!
We enjoyed a helicopter ride out to a glacier from Juneau.
