newbie mom

my son is cherokee w/ tribal card. he’s QB and captain of his football team. he’s pretty good although he’s only about 5’9 and on a struggling team. currently he’s ranked 2nd out of 350. we live in oklahoma and he goes to a public school that is about 20% native american with 50% poverty. he only made 24 on his ACT but will take it again. what are his chances to maybe play sprint football and get into an ivy?

thank you for your help,

I’d say go for it!

I think he should study for the ACT and take it over, and also study for the SAT and take that a couple of times, depending on his scores.

HIs ACT right now makes it doubtful that he’d be an Ivy admit, but his presumably high gpa at a presumably weak public school indicates that his ACT score reflects going to a weak school, not a lack of ability. That’s why I suggest that he study for both the ACT and SAT to raise his scores. Many of the very high scorers on the ACT/SAT not only went to very strong schools, they also studied for the test and took the test more than once.

I believe that the College Board offers free on-line prep for the SAT. Also check Xiggi’s tips in the SAT boards here.

If he can raise his ACT score several points or get an SAT score of at least 1800, his admission chances would be better than many applicants, though no one is a sure bet for admission to an Ivy. Of all the Ivies, Dartmouth probably would be his best chance since it was started to serve Native Americans. It also is very sports-oriented.

Also check out Wesleyan, an excellent LAC that does a good job of recruiting minorities.

thank you so much NorthStarmom. that’s pretty much what I figured. and he is def signed up to take the ACT again and the SAT for sure.
