My Doxie is on a very controlled diet because he’s diabetic. He eats a high protein, veggie, grain free diet (or nearly grain free…may have some brown rice in some favors). His food is mostly that fridge Fresh Pet and some dry that is also high protein with veggies and low/no grain. He eats 2-3 times per day, then gets insulin shots.
His tummy is a bit gassy…not a lot of stinky gas, but he’ll whine a bit about an hour after eating because the gas building up in his intestines is uncomfortable. So, I usually have to deep-rub his lower tummy area in a clockwise motion and I will feel many, many, many bubbles moving around and then he’s happy and goes to sleep.
(I know this sounds crazy…I apply pressure on his lower abdomen…visualize a clock…with 12:00 at his belly button…I start at around the 7:00 mark and move clock-wise to about 4:00…and repeat…and I can usually feel many many bubbles move. I often even hear the bubbles moving…snap, crackle, pop!.)
I’m thinking that the high protein and veggies are the underlying cause of the indigestion. Changing to other brands of high protein foods hasn’t made a difference (and with a diabetic dog, changing foods makes for dangerous blood sugar issues)
has anyone found any sort of drops or anything that can be added to food to help break up these bubbles or help with this?
I do not have any personal experience with a diabetic pup, but did find these articles that have specific recommendations for prebiotics and probiotics to assist with the trouble your pup is experiencing.
Ha - Sabapup is my younger dog. Ask the vet if Purina Fortiflora would be appropriate. You sprinkle it on their food. Sabapup loves it - she thinks it’s a treat!
No - not a Rx. I have bought it through chewy.com at a much lower price (we were going through quite a bit of it). I’m sure there are some calories associated with it, however - that may impact your pup’s diabetes, so I’d double check if it would be appropriate. Good luck - I hope it helps. You’re a good mom to offer those extended tummy rubs!
My part-doxie is on a lower-protein gastro food, so that’s no help to yours. But mine got probiotics after he got sick a couple of years ago (like the one mentioned above), and he loved them, and it really helped him. Good luck!!
My senior is in prerenal failure. Purina Fortiflora is one of the supplements she receives daily. I don’t want to put extra stress on the kidneys with digestive issues.
We had trouble with gas with our dogs when we fed them the blue buffalo ‘wild’ food, we switched them to basics and it stopped. There are probiotics for dogs, you also could try dog biscuits that have charcoal in them, that may help.
