NFL 2023-24 Discussion Thread

It was fun while it lasted. And as a lifelong Lions fan, I can state without hesitation that I absolutely never thought they’d get this far. While the Super Bowl would have been amazing, realistically, getting to this game and not being blown out is pretty awesome!

We’re happy here, too, @kelsmom. So proud of the hometown team to make it as far as they did. On to next year!

I’m with @abasket, Super Bowl has no meaning for us now except for the snacks at a party we’ve been invited to. We’re going to wear our Lions shirts, though, and root for the Niners.

(You Chiefs fans should be happy as it seems any NFL team we back loses. Ha!)

We’re currently taking/listening to apologies from all our truly obnoxious Lions’ friends.

Before the game, one friend rooting for Detroit was asking “Do you really think Brock Purdy is ‘the guy’?”

Purdy had nearly 50 rushing yards.

As for the Chiefs-Ravens game, I was kinda hoping for the Chiefs.

A. It’ll be a rematch of the 2019 (played in 2020) Super Bowl between the Chiefs and 49ers, assuming the Niners would win, and

B. Speaking for all non-Chiefs fans across America, we’re tired of the camera panning to see Taylor Swift’s reaction. It would be so nice to change her smiles to a frown. :grinning:

Bang, bang Niner gang!

We appreciate your support

But seriously, great season for the Lions. This isn’t one and done.

I loved that game. I would have loved to see the Lions in the Super Bowl. But both teams played amazing games. Best game of the post season, IMHO.

There are going to be two very young quarterbacks in that Super Bowl!

There’s a bright future for them both.
But the fact that one of them is making his fourth Super Bowl appearance in his 6 year career is incredible!

Did you hear? This is going to be the first Super Bowl where the excitement and giddiness for the musical performer is not actually on the field but watching behind glass in the stands.

What a hoot it would have been if TS was scheduled to be the 2024 half time show - on the field.

(Totally blame the NFL for basically assigning a camera man to watch what dipping sauce TS uses for her stadium chicken nuggets… they are RAKING in the fruits of this relationship…and a lot of us are tired of it! - not her fault!)

So tired that I probably won’t watch the Super Bowl.

Campbell lost the game. Forget about drop passes etc. He goes for the field goal, they win the game. Both teams played hard. I am also sick of people saying Purdy isn’t good (ESPN CHICAGO RADIO SHOW). He’s an anomaly. But he’s talented. Sure he has the team behind him and does enough. It’s only year 2. If he keeps getting better he will be very dangerous.

Lions have a great team now with really young players. They will just keep getting better.

Chicago Bears - we are screwed. We need to get to the level of our division. Caleb or Drake better be the real deal… Lol

It was almost like he was coaching for the Niners in that second half

I feel bad for his players. They play hard. But I got the result that I thought would happen. Mahomes is the second coming and Purdy is such a great story. Sometimes getting the ball to your play makers just works. Chiefs defense is also much better then people usually talk about. They kinda rise to the occasion when they need to.

Campbell got to the game BECAUSE he coached the way he coached yesterday. You can second guess as much as you want, but he took a team that has been absolutely horrible for many, many years and made it a Super Bowl contender. Are you kidding me? We would have been thrilled with a winning season and a playoff game. Campbell is a great coach whose players love him … and also respect him. You can second guess pretty much any loss. But the guy is a great coach, and even great coaches don’t always win on any given day.

Do you know how many times I’ve sat in my “armchair” yelling at Kyle Shanahan to go for it on 4th down? He’s about as conservative non-analytics of a coach that there is in the NFL.

Campbell went for it on two 4th downs. I wouldn’t blame Campbell at all.

This sounds suspiciously like you’re calling Purdy a “game manager,” and you’re not alone.

Even Taylor Swift is getting tired of the coverage.

There are actually well known charts comparing go for the 1st down, field goal try, or punt in 4th down situations. From Go For It?: A Guide to Optimal Fourth Down Decision Making – Best Ball Stats

The two failed 4th down conversions were 4th and 2 at the 28 and 4th and 3 at the 30. When there are not specific tactical situations (e.g. late game or late half situations), they both fall close to the margin between going for the first down and trying a field goal.

Of course, the after-the-fact commentary will depend on whether the chosen play is successful and whether it affected the outcome of the game (though points scored or not scored).

The Lions do not currently have a reliable field goal kicker, a fact that undoubtedly figured in the play calls. I am willing to bet that there is a new kicker on the team next year.

According to article posted by Austin Mock of the Athletic:

The writer above questions Dan Campbell’s decision-making in these two instances:

And this is their second kicker. They released the first. Kicking has been a problem all season

Monday morning quarterbacking lol… Please don’t get me wrong. I love Campbells style. His players play really hard for him. I have watched also a lot of their games this year so I know he goes for it. But, just sometimes it just doesn’t make sense especially in a playoff game where points are at a premium. There was another game a few weeks ago and the team kept getting field goals and the coach said… Sometimes you just gotta go for the points. Not sexy but points win the games. I am proud of the Lions and they will be a better team next year for the experience. Again, no matter who Chicago gets at QB… We are screwed. Our division just got a lot better than this year.

I was hoping for the Ravens and the 49ers. Oh well, I got 50%.
