NFL draft ... anyone watching?

Dang it, my Jets lost Mayfield to the hapless Browns. You said it…the Browns is where star college QBs go to die. I am no fan of Darnold. Was not impressed by his career at USC. Pac-12 is a very so-so league…every year a Boise State or Wyoming or or Nevada beats a Pac-12 team.

Barkley will be an instant hit with the GIANTS.

I was surprised to see the Offensive Linemen go so high. Pete Carroll doesn’t have a lot of faith in today’s college OL players. He said they are not properly trained by college coaches, which is why he experimented with converting DL guys to OL guys on the Seahawks.

Every QB in the 2018 draft has issues. Last year, Mitch Trubisky, drafted at #2 by the Chicago Bears, had issues. Goff (Cal Berkeley) and Wentz had issues coming out of college as well. You just don’t know how they’ll turn out. Luck (Stanford) was a clear choice for the #1 pick, and played great while healthy, but he’s been injured for so long.

I thought the 49ers’ pick was boring, but McGlinchey and Nelson, both from ND, were solid picks. Personally, thus far, the Shanahan-Lynch regime have made some excellent moves, including getting Jimmy G. for a 2nd round pick from the Pats. I’m just happy that the 49ers didn’t have to participate in the QB festivities in this 2018 Draft, because as I said above, every QB in the 2018 Draft didn’t look that spectacular to me.

Although, Lamar Jackson at #32 looks like a steal of a deal to me. He looks like Deshaun Jackson did coming out of Clemson.

@MaineLonghorn I saw the McConaughey video last night and the field with the W on it. Both my sons have played football and soccer on that field.

Even though I like Barkley, it was stupid for the Giants to pick him at #2, Running backs don’t last long in this league, and teams can get just as good performance from RB’s who are late rounds or not even drafted.

They won’t be able to afford to keep him for his option year, and for a first round pick a team should be able to get more than 4 years - even if they are very good years.

I agree that Lamar Jackson going at 32 is the overall steal of the draft.

@cgpm59, cool! Of course, the field wasn’t that cool when I went to school there! They named the field after a long-time coach, who was my biology teacher. His wife was my math teacher and I’m still Facebook friends with her.

I agree. Eli was benched last year, he was playing so bad.

The Steelers are having a similar problem now with Le’veon Bell. The Steelers don’t want to pay him what he’s worth, so they’ve franchise-tagged him. Why? Running backs have a short “shelf life.” And Bell is upset that he’s not being paid the big bucks. So, he sits out OTA’s (organized team activities), because he wants a big brand new contract.

Not to harp on about the 49ers, but that’s been somewhat of a tenant of both Mike (dad, coached the Denver Broncos) and Kyle (son) Shanahan’s coaching careers. Get running backs in later rounds, like Terrell Davis, many years ago, use them until they slow down, and then move on to the next cheap RB.

There’s still a ton of good/excellent talent available today in Rounds 2 and 3. Hoping the 49ers make some more (they traded Trent Brown today) trades to move up from #59.

@3puppies Good point. Couple of years ago the Seahawks had a starting RB who was a rookie free agent. He made great runs and was a solid contributor. Injuries held him back somewhat, but the Seahawks won games with his offensive play. A good scouting operation will produce a good rookie RB, if the scouts know one when they see one. And Bill Parcells was the master at finding undrafted but talented free agents whom were starter material.

@sushiritto I think you mean DeShaun WATSON coming out of CLemson. DeShaun Jackson is a WR out of Cal… Agree with you that Lamar Jackson was the deal of the first round…

Yep, you’re correct. But, it’s DeSean Jackson, not Deshaun.

And it’s not the first time that I’ve mixed up those two gentlemen’s last names either. I have fond memories of watching Mr. Jackson at Cal and had wished the 49ers would have drafted him, but they chose 2 “losers” in front of Mr. Jackson. Oh, the painful memories.

@eyemamom - Kerryon was just picked by Detroit.

@sushiritto…yes, I goofed on the spelling.

Oct. 3, 2015, attended the ND vs. CLemson game–we had a house divided. Who to cheer for?? Deshaun or DeShone? Who knew there’s so many ways to spell that name! (I like DeSean spelling best!)

I’m so happy for Connor Williams, who is going to his hometown team. And my team.

Really happy for Shaquem Griffin. What a story.
